The Fern Capital of the World

The small town of Pierson is known as the “Fern Capital of the World” and the hometown of baseball player Chipper Jones. From vast emerald fields of ferns to moss-covered old-growth oaks, the small town has a rural, spread-out atmosphere. “People move to Pierson for acreage and huge yards,” says Realtor Evelyn Malave who has 3 years of experience in the area and works with Charles Rutenberg Realty. Located on St. John’s River, residents can stay active with riverside recreation and even dwell in homes on the water.

Diverse architecture on large lots

West of Daytona Beach, Pierson is composed of a main thoroughfare of businesses, a few residential roads and undeveloped land. Although the area isn’t walkable, the extra space means empty multi-acre lots are available. As for the homes, they often have sprawling, well-manicured yards decorated by palm trees, and some come with docks and water access. The diverse architecture includes ranch-style homes, split-levels, lakefront log cabins and Spanish-influenced homes. Sales prices range from $140,000 for a ranch-style cottage to $500,000 for a waterside log cabin. “It has a comparable price to other areas nearby. It’s not very expensive or affordable,” Malave says.
