Custom homes and golf course views
Many of the homes here are sprawling custom builds, with Traditional and European-inspired design details, but there are some single-story ranch-style homes scattered about, too. Prices start at around $685,000 and can climb to $1.7 million, a difference largely dictated by square footage and whether there’s a golf course view. “It’s accurate to say that Pinewild residents, and Pinehurst residents in general, are definitely nearing, if not at, retirement age. Most, if they didn’t grow up here, come for the golf and the country clubs, so they’re willing to pay a premium to live in communities like this one,” says Dineen-Carlson, adding that prices in Pinewild are on par with those in Pinehurst. “There’s nothing really under $600,000 here. You might be able to find something, but I doubt it. And it’s the same story in the rest of the town, with the exception of Pinewood Village, where the median price is more like $4 million.”Golf country
Home to Pinehurst Resort, which comprises 10 golf courses, Pinehurst is known for its golf. Pinehurst No. 2, designed by Donald Ross, has hosted more than its share of major golf championships. The U.S. Open was held there in 2024 for the fourth time, and it will return in 2029, 2035, 2041 and 2047. The world-famous course is less than 4 miles southeast of home. And, of course, the Pinewild gated community is spread around the Pinewild Country Club of Pinehurst (Pinewild CC), which has three courses of its own. Two of them, the Magnolia and the Holly, are 18-hole, par-72 courses. The third, the Azalea, is a 9-hole, par-27 course. Members of the private club can do more than golf, though. The dining room at the clubhouse is a popular spot to grab dinner, especially on balmy summer evenings, as its patio overlooks the Magnolia course’s 18th hole. Pinewild CC also features a Junior Olympic-sized outdoor pool and courts for racquet sports. At Pinewild Park, near Stoneykirk Drive, club members can boat on the 25-acre Lake Pinewild. The park also has a playground, picnic areas and horseshoe pits. “Pinehurst Country Club is really the cream of the crop in terms of clubs around here. It’s very exclusive, with a years-long waiting list for membership. You have to pay to get on the list, and then you have to be interviewed before getting off the list, the whole nine yards,” says Dineen-Carlson. Club membership is separate from Pinewild Property Owners Association membership; it’s possible to become a member of the club without living in the Pinewild neighborhood.Highly rated Moore County Schools
Between preschool and fifth grade, Pinewild youngsters attend either Pinehurst Elementary or West Pine Elementary, depending on their address. Both schools earn A-minuses from Niche; Pinehurst Elementary is ranked No. 4 on Niche’s list of the best public elementary schools in Moore County. Between sixth and 12th grades, students go to West Pine Middle and Pinecrest High, both of which also earn A-minuses from Niche. And Pinecrest High boasts the No. 1 spot on Niche’s list of the best public high schools in the county. “The high school is very large, about 2,000 kids,” says Dineen-Carlson. She adds that high school athletic programs in the county are “very strong.” In 2024, the Pinecrest Patriots men’s golf team won their eighth North Carolina High School Athletic Association title. Dineen-Carlson says that many Pinewild parents opt to send their kids to private school between preschool and 12th grade, and that one of the most prestigious private schools in the area is The O’Neal School. The non-parochial, college preparatory school’s 40-acre campus is in the neighboring town of Southern Pines, about 8 miles east of home. It earns an A-plus from Niche.Minutes from major Moore County employers
Depending on traffic along Linden Road, the nearly 3-mile drive east into the village center can take about 10 minutes. FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital is just a few blocks northeast of downtown. “The hospital is a big employer in the area, and it has a huge campus,” says Dineen-Carlson of the 402-bed, acute-care, not-for-profit hospital. North Carolina Highway 211 runs past the north end of Pinewild, connecting southeast through the north side of Pinehurst proper to North Carolina Route 501. The neighboring small town of Southern Pines is about 9 miles east of the neighborhood, a drive that typically takes just 20 minutes, traffic dependent. Fort Bragg, one of the largest military installations in the world and one of the area’s major employers, is less than 40 miles east. The commute takes about 54 minutes in light traffic conditions.Upscale shopping/dining district in the village center
For groceries and other everyday essentials, locals can visit the Harris Teeter or Lowes Foods off Yadkin Road, less than 4 miles away. Nearby, there are several familiar chain eateries, including McDonald’s and Starbucks. But for retailers and restaurants with a more upscale, local vibe, residents can head into Pinehurst proper. The shopping and dining district in the village’s center, in and around Market Square, is home to all kinds of boutiques, pubs and eateries. Agora Bakery & Café is known for its community-oriented, family-friendly atmosphere as much as it is for its menu of modern Southern fare with a European twist. The Villager Deli has been a popular spot since 1982. Its breakfast and lunch menus emphasize fresh, seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. For international cuisine, there’s Neko Thai & Sushi, Lisi Italian and Villaggio Ristorante & Bar. Good spots for after-dinner drinks include Dugan’s Pub and Drum & Quill Public House. One of Dineen-Carlson’s favorite places to shop for clothes is Monkee’s of the Pines, just a block from Market Square, off Chinquapin Road. There’s also DuneBerry for resort wear, Bump & Baby for children’s wear and Gentlemen’s Corner for menswear, all in a three-block span. At Old Golf Shop, native and visiting golf enthusiasts alike can peruse golf-related antiques/collectibles.
