Quiet East Bay bedroom community near Old Town Pittsburg
Surrounded by grassy open valleys and rolling terrain, the Hillsdale neighborhood of Pittsburg well lives up to its name. “It’s a nice bedroom community that borders the hills,” says Joanne Hodge, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty and a longtime Pittsburg resident. “It’s a convenient area if you have to commute.” With close access to Highway 4 and BART stations, Hillsdale draws in residents for its overall convenience, lower starting prices for homes in the East Bay and its relaxed suburban setting. “It’s a more secluded area since it’s all very residential, so people really like that because it’s quiet and you don’t have to deal with any traffic noise,” says Tameka Ramsey, a local resident and training community manager at the neighborhood's Woodland Hills Park Apartments. “But we aren’t completely remote. We can still walk over to Woodland Hills Park, and we are right next to Randolph Avenue, which has restaurants and stores for pretty much any everyday things you’d need.”
Well-manicured lawns and classic California ranchers
The neighborhood’s softly winding streetscapes feature narrow sidewalks lined with a mix of palm, oak and columnar trees. California ranchers and bungalows are the most common housing styles, often with exterior features like stucco roofs. Properties here typically have modest, well-manicured lawns with some sidewalk access and mature landscaping. Although some houses offer driveways and garages, there is also on-street parking. Home prices start around $400,000 for a 2- to 3-bedroom, 1,000-square-foot home and can go as high as $700,000 for a 4-bedroom, 1,700-square-foot property with views of the hills.
Public schools with an engineering and robotics academy
Students can attend Heights Elementary School, which gets a C-plus rating from Niche, followed by the C-plus-rated Hillview Junior High School. Pittsburg Senior High School gets a B rating. The high school offers students a variety of academic options, including career and technical education classes, Advanced Placement courses and an engineering and robotics academy.
Next to main highways and BART Stations
Highway 4 is Hillsdale’s main thoroughfare, located a few miles north, connecting the community to the rest of the Bay Area. The neighborhood is also conveniently next to Turka Pass Road. “A big draw is that residents here can easily take Turka Pass Road to get to Clayton or Mount Diablo, which is a much faster route than other nearby highways that can get very backed up.” A few Tri Delta Transit bus stops are located along Railroad Avenue, while the Pittsburg Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Center Station is about a mile north. The Oakland International Airport is the closest airport for domestic and international flights, about 40 miles south of the neighborhood.
Neighborhood green spaces and nearby hiking and biking trails
The 2.4-acre Woodland Hills Park offers plenty of open green space along with a playground and basketball courts. Buchanan Park, just west of the neighborhood across Railroad Avenue, is a much larger recreational space with a duck pond, picnic areas and a seasonal aquatic center that offers classes, lessons and a weekly obstacle course. Stoneman Trailhead sits just west of the neighborhood, with scenic hiking trails that bring clusters of golden poppies along the area’s expansive open hills each spring. The Via Delta de Anza Regional Trail is along the neighborhood's northern border for even more hiking and biking possibilities. This paved trail spans over 15 miles and connects residents to several of the area’s parks and schools.
Local Mexican cuisine and dining along Railroad Avenue
Birreria El Puente is the one local restaurant within Hillsdale’s neighborhood boundaries. This restaurant offers authentic Mexican dishes, including popular items like birria tacos. Other dining options are located less than a mile outside Hillsdale, primarily along Railroad Avenue. Nation’s Giant Hamburgers & Great Pies is a well-frequented American chain known for their oversized burgers and all-day breakfast menu in a throwback retro interior space. Next door is Mr. Jalapeno, a highly rated food truck for Mexican cuisine, where they prepare freshly made tortilla chips. Further north up Railroad Avenue is the longstanding Wah Sing Chinese Restaurant, offering traditional Chinese dishes. Cardenas Markets is less than a few miles north and is one of the go-to area spots for grocery items. It’s also well known for its freshly made tortillas and fruit and juice bar. The Century Plaza Shopping Center is about five miles east, with service shops, casual dining chains and big box stores like Costco, PetSmart and Ross.
Art walks and car shows in Old Town Pittsburg
Residents can enjoy community events a few miles away in Pittsburg’s Old Town District. The annual Pittsburg Car Show each July is an area favorite, featuring vintage car displays and a full-day lineup of live music. The beloved Art Trax, a community art walk, is another highly frequented event. This monthly summer series takes place throughout Old Town’s historic streets, showcasing local artwork from local artists and featuring a few pop-up galleries. The popular Pittsburg Library, located less than a few miles north of the neighborhood, hosts numerous community events, including seasonal concerts from local performers.
