A college town in Southeast Kansas

Pittsburg is the most populous city in Crawford County and is in Southeast Kansas close to the Missouri State line. Named for the city in Pennsylvania, but without the H, the city’s history is tied to the coal mining industry. The city is home to Pittsburg State University, which has brought a near renaissance to the city as the school’s campus has continued to intertwine with downtown. “Anytime you have a university town, there’s a young vibe,” says Nichole Hamblin, a Realtor with ReeceNichols Sunflower Realty. “There are quite a few hometown businesses in the area, but Pitt State is the driving force and the heart of this town.”

Education – both at the college and public school district – is among the top employers in the city. Other industry includes trade, transportation and healthcare.

Midcentury architecture at accessible rates

Housing styles from bungalows to ranch-style to 2-story traditional line Pittsburg streets. The median list price is $155,250, less than half the U.S. median list price of $420,000. The median home sale price was up 15% year over year.
Hamblin offers an optimistic response when young people say they’ll ever be able to own a home.

“Pittsburg’s affordable. You can put a little work into an older home, or you can even buy a brand-new home here for a reasonable price,” she says, suggesting buyers explore builder incentives and shop government loans.

Mined Land Wildlife Area is an expansive outdoor retreat

Mined Land Wildlife Area, which was the surface land of the city’s coal mines from the 1920s to mid-70s has been transformed into more than 14,000 acres of outdoor recreation. The diverse topography can be used for hunting, hiking, and berry picking, while anglers can use its ponds and lakes. The city maintains 15 parks with varying amenities. Schlanger Park has an all-abilities playground and pool, while Lincoln Park is home to the J.J. Richards Band Dome, Kiddieland Amusement Park and the Pittsburg Aquatic Center.

Chicken Annie’s and Chicken Mary’s continue to battle out the “chicken wars”

Downtown Pittsburg offers a variety of shops, boutiques and eateries, such as Toast, bolstered by the new development in Block 22. Meanwhile, eight miles up the road, the “chicken wars” continue to play out as Chicken Annie’s and Chicken Mary’s continue their 8-decade battle to see who serves the best fried chicken. Residents can find more shopping options at the Meadowbrook Shopping Complex and Walmart Supercenter.

Community rallies around Pittsburg State University

Pittsburg State University’s campus has become a makeshift community gathering space. Sporting events bring the community together. As does the school’s Bicknell Family Center for the Arts. The space has an art gallery and two performance halls that host concerts, shows and plays throughout the year. “Everybody’s a Gorilla,” Hamblin says, making note of the school’s mascot. “You can always find a basketball or football game you can attend. The performing arts community for a town of this size is amazing.”
