A relaxed, but convenient coastal lifestyle in Playa del Rey

Playa del Rey is an oceanfront neighborhood in western Los Angeles that is known for its relaxed charm. Although its name means “beach of the king”, the atmosphere here is anything but formal. Residents spend their free time biking by the ocean and enjoying the wide beaches and natural landscapes. Living here also keeps you close to everything you need, with restaurants and shops within walking distance and Westside job centers just a short drive away.

Finding a home in Playa del Rey

Playa del Rey is made up of several distinct neighborhoods, each with its own feel. Around The Lagoon, you’ll find tall, narrow homes, often built to the three-story limit to maximize space and views. The Hill tends to have slightly larger lots, with a mix of midcentury architecture and newer infill. The Jungle is defined by its dense grid of duplexes and small apartment buildings, and there’s also a separate pocket of condos and apartments farther inland.

Single-family homes typically range from just over $1 million to nearly $5 million. Condos generally sell from the low $400,000s to about $1 million, and townhouses go from the low $800,000s to around $2 million.

With the Los Angeles International Airport directly to the south, noise is a concern for residents. Most homes are already equipped with sound-dampening windows and doors, and owners can apply for grants to help cover additional soundproofing upgrades.

Commuting around the Westside

The Marvin Braude Bike Trail connects the community to other Westside neighborhoods and cities, and Lincoln Boulevard, the name of state Route 1 in this area, is the main road for drivers. Living here puts you right next door to Playa Vista, a hub for tech jobs. Other nearby employers include Loyola Marymount University and Los Angeles International Airport. Santa Monica is less than 10 miles away, but during peak travel times, the trip can stretch to over an hour. If you’re headed to Downtown LA, expect the 20-mile commute to take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half.

Dockweiler bonfires and coastal bike rides

There are several ways to stay active here. One highlight is the nearly 4-mile Dockweiler State Beach, a popular spot for beach volleyball or evening bonfires. Toes Beach, to the north of it, tends to see less tourist traffic. “It’s almost private because access is more limited,” says Janin Paine, Realtor with Compass and LA native. “It’s a big, beautiful, wide beach.”

The Del Rey Lagoon is a favorite for families, thanks to its shaded playground and lighted sports fields, while cyclists and joggers often take advantage of the Marvin Braude Bike Trail, which hugs the shoreline. “You can ride all the way to Venice and Santa Monica, or go south toward Manhattan Beach,” Paine says. The route also passes the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve and the El Segundo Blue Butterfly Preserve, home to rare wildlife like legless lizards and El Segundo blue butterflies. “You’re surrounded by nature areas, so it’s kind of quiet, except for the airport noise.”

School options for Playa del Rey families

Playa del Rey is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Some kids attend Katherine Johnson STEM Academy, a member of the Loyola Marymount University family of schools. Students can also apply to St. Bernard College Preparatory, a private high school in the community that earns an A-minus rating from Niche.

Where to shop and dine if you live in Playa del Rey

Some residents are within walking distance of Culver Boulevard, the community’s main retail strip. “It’s got a little of everything, even shoe repair,” Paine says. Popular spots include:

  • Playa Provisions, a space shared by four businesses, including an ice cream shop and a cafe
  • The Shack, a longstanding casual burger joint and bar
  • Local Market & Deli, a go-to for sandwiches, snacks and prepared foods
  • Petros Kafe, known for its Greek food and espresso drinks
Paine notes that for bigger shopping trips, many residents head to Playa Vista, where there’s a Whole Foods Market and a Home Depot, as well as a weekly farmers market. Westchester and Marina Del Rey offer a wider variety of dining options.

Things to do in and around Playa Del Rey

While there are hundreds of festivals and events throughout the Greater LA area each year, residents have some things to do closer to home. Each month, Rusty’s Rhythm Club hosts a dance lesson followed by a community swing dance, and the LA Jazz Festival brings concerts to Dockweiler State Beach. You can also check out beach movie nights at the nearby Dockweiler Youth Center or the December holiday boat parade in neighboring Marina del Rey.
