Sheltered by the Ag Reserve

Amid the Agricultural Reserve, Poolesville offers a rural respite from the bustle of nearby Washington, D.C. The Maryland town brushes against the western edge of Montgomery County, six miles from the gentle curve of the Potomac River. “Poolesville has an isolated small-town feel, but it’s connected to the larger world,” says Assistant Town Manager Niles Anderegg. “It’s a nice, proud, well-integrated small town.” With Baltimore’s harbor just 55 miles west and the nation’s capital 30 miles south, it’s also a haven for commuters.

From its seat on Fisher Avenue, the commons preside over community events that draw neighbors together. During May’s SpringFest, residents enjoy beer and barbecue while blues music wails in the background. Poolesville Day brings an antique car show and craft vendors to the area in September. Rocktober Fest, another autumn celebration, features live music, kids’ activities, s’mores stations and a beer and wine tent.

In general, buyers can get more for their money here than in one of the suburbs closer to Washington, D.C.
