Boise, like Rolls Royce
It’s not boy-zee. It’s BOYCE.
Sitting north of the Interstate 5 and Interstate 405 interchange – making it easy to get around greater Portland – Boise has become one of the city’s most vibrant and eclectic neighborhoods. “When you see Portland pop up, what they’re talking about is the Boise neighborhood, with the food scene, the music scene, the diversity and culture,” says Kiley Ford, Realtor for MORE Realty, who was born and raised just southeast of the neighborhood. Featuring bustling shopping and dining destinations along Mississippi and Williams Avenues, separated by highly walkable and bikeable residential streets overhung by shade trees, it’s a trendy hotspot. Coupled with the vicinity of nearby top jobs providers like Kaiser Permanente, Legacy and Daimler Truck, it’s desirable and convenient.

Mississippi and Williams Avenues are always alive
“Mississippi Studios, you can catch a show, and then Bar Bar is their sidekick with outside dining, they have the best burger in town and a puppy patio,” says Ford. The restaurant scene is exhaustive in diversity, from brunch to dinner, touching on everything from Scandinavian at Broder Nord to Chinese at XLB, to neighborhood favorite Mississippi Pizza for hand-tossed pies. “At brunch you hit Gravy, which is like the best chicken fried steak I’ve ever had – it’s so good,” says Ford, “It’s so much fun, you grab brunch, you hit the little shops, get some Coco Donuts, walk around.” One can’t eat every meal out – residents swing down to the local New Seasons Market where they specialize in locally-sourced groceries. Boise has even found a way to even make doing the laundry entertaining at the Spin Laundry Lounge, where residents enjoy food, beverages and arcade games while waiting for the rinse cycle to finish. Ford also notes the ReBuilding Center at the bottom of the neighborhood helps to repurpose historic hardware and fixtures from local homes, instead of running out to a hardware store and buying something new.
The Boise neighborhood offers many restaurants with outdoor seating.

Eclectic homes reflect the Portland vibe
Trees along the streets of Boise provide shade in front of the picturesque houses, although another unique-to-Portland feature pops out to pedestrians. “When you’re walking down the side streets, you’ll see the horse rings – hitching rings from the historic era of Portland – people will tie plastic horses up to them,” says Ford. Often set back by a small front lawn, the eclectic homes reflect Portland’s attitude. “You’ll see a million dollar single-family home, then an old Portland-style Craftsman home – which I grew up in – that is so goofy but so full of character, and then a modern style condo,” Ford says of the neighborhood. Condos in the Boise neighborhood generally sell in the $350,000 to $450,000 range, while townhouses, small single-family homes and luxury condos stretch from $500,000 to $700,000. Larger homes and townhouses that push 3,000 square feet often go for $800,000 and up.

Off-leash love for pups and more
Central to the neighborhood, DeNorval Unthank City Park features a basketball court, baseball field, and playground for children. Many residents will cross the Pacific Highway to enjoy the great views of the city from the tree-studded green space of Overlook Park. This park also offers an off-leash dog area that allows city dogs to get some running in. Residents wanting to dedicate themselves to fitness have StarCycle Portland and Superpower Studios that offer equipment and programs.

Party on Mississippi
Ford is a fan of Boise putting on a show - “Another cool thing that Boise does is the Mississippi Street Fair, which is the biggest Portland has – they have hundreds of vendors.” Every July, Mississippi Avenue shuts down for five blocks to throw a party in the street. It’s open for everyone, and includes a kid zone, a kid’s stage at Mississippi Pizza, three main stages for music, food vendors, a rib contest and more. It’s not just for the neighborhood either, as people from across the city come out for the one-day event.

Bicyclist’s paradise
“Boise is a 30-minute bike to downtown,” Ford mentions – and it shows, as bicycles and scooters are a favored way of transportation as well as a way to make sure residents don’t lose their parking spot. Boise is a biker’s and walker’s paradise, and has bus stops throughout the neighborhood that reach throughout the city. Portland International Airport, fondly referred to as PDX, is 7 miles northeast of the neighborhood, and accessible by transit. Legacy Emanuel and Kaiser Permanente Hospitals are just outside the neighborhood – even from the furthest point they are only a mile or so away, often less than a 5-minute drive.

Right in the heart of Portland’s jobs
Ford notes that Boise isn’t all play and no work. “A lot of people move there to work at Kaiser, adidas, the community college, they come from all over.” The neighborhood is centrally located for these places, as well as other major industry like Daimler Truck, Union Pacific, UPS, and Legacy Emanuel Medical Center.

North Portland does have a bit of gang violence but in general I find the area very safe. I have never experienced talking to a cop in my neighborhood. I feel safe all times of the day and night.
