Historic homes and nearby dining and shopping make life in Hollywood enjoyable
Named for the landmark Hollywood Theater at the center of the neighborhood's shopping district, Hollywood is a small, historic neighborhood in East Portland. The neighborhood is split between retail and commercial spaces along Sandy Boulevard, which diagonally bisects the neighborhood, and residential blocks surrounding the thoroughfare. Like most neighborhoods in the area, Hollywood’s homes and commercial buildings mainly were constructed during the first decades of the 20th century. Buyers will find well-updated bungalows, Craftsman-style homes, and American Foursquare homes, as well as newer townhouses and condominiums, some with funky street-level retail.
The popular historic district of Hollywood features street murals that testify to the artistic talent of locals. It also hosts the Hollywood Farmers Market each Saturday with more than 50 vendors, live music and activities for the whole family. While there’s a lot to love about Hollywood, buyers should be aware that, not unlike many downtown Portland areas, they will encounter homelessness and other challenges. While that can be concerning to newcomers, it does have the effect of leveling real estate prices, which can make buying desirable historic homes a bit easier. And, as Realtor Spencer Brennan, founder of Relevant Real Estate LLC, and a Portland real estate agent for over six years explains, “Hollywood is known for its strong sense of community. Neighbors talk daily, exchange information, check up on each other and participate in Neighborhood Watch activities. That makes for a strong neighborhood no matter what the challenges are.”

Standout eateries and legendary English pubs get attention in Hollywood
Lavishly appointed Hollywood Theatre has been drawing Portland moviegoers for nearly a century, and today they feature new, classic, and independent films. Quirky retailers include Crooked House Books and iconic thrift shop Ray’s Ragtime. The neighborhood’s small size belies its vast assortment of top-quality restaurants. Vegan donut and ice cream shop Doe Donuts, Korean grill The Bulgogi, and historic Chin’s Kitchen, are just a few. Locals enjoy a pint and autographed photos of movies stars and famous sports figures at legendary English pub The Moon and Sixpence. For grocery shopping, they’ll head to Whole Foods, Target, Trader Joe’s and Grocery Outlet.
Art shows, flower basket decorating and the Rose Festival are popular events in Hollywood
In addition to movies at Hollywood Theater, the Hollywood Boosters Business Association hosts regular events in the neighborhood including holiday art shows and Christmas caroling, the Rose Festival Parade and a Veteran’s Day Parade.

Large and small parks offer trails, fields and swimming pools
While there aren’t any parks in this bite-size neighborhood, nearby Grant Park, located just a couple blocks northwest of Hollywood, has trails, athletic fields, and a swimming pool, not to mention a sculpture honoring the characters from books by Beverly Cleary. Residents work out at nearby 24 Hour Fitness and head east to Normandale Dog Park for off-leash play for their pups.
I-84 connects locals from Portland to Boise
Interstate 84 runs from east to west through the south edge of Hollywood and connects residents southwest to downtown Portland. It then continues east toward the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest and then southeast to Boise, Idaho. Three MAX Light Rail lines run through the local station, but be aware that maximum speeds are 35 miles per hour, so if time is of the essence, driving might prove faster.
Notable Beverly Cleary School resides in Hollywood
While there are no schools in Hollywood itself, the neighborhood is part of the Portland Public Schools District with an overall Niche grade of B. Beverly Cleary School offers Kindergarten through eighth grade, earns an A-minus grade from Niche and is named after one of America’s most successful children’s book authors who grew up in the Grant Park neighborhood. Grant High School is not only ranked as the No. 3 best public high school in Multnomah County by Niche, but Niche gives it an overall grade of A-minus.
