Shaping the future of Potterville
With new developments coming to town, “The City of Helping Hands” aims to retain its small community feel. The main downtown area, Potterville, is located off Interstate 69, which makes for convenient travel into Lansing, Michigan’s State Capital. “Charlotte is also very close to Potterville and some people for shopping are either going to Lansing or Charlotte,” says Dave Reynolds, Broker Owner of RE/MAX Hometown, who has been working in the real estate industry for 32 years. After a day spent visiting area parks, hunting, supporting local businesses downtown or stocking up on groceries and household items in neighboring areas, residents return home to either cul-de-sacs or farmlands.

Going beyond the grid
Moving away from Potterville’s gridded streets, homes sit on lots that expand in acreage the further away from the city they are located. Subdivisions are closest to the city center and are where much of the new construction is found. Homes range in price from $117,000 for a three-bedroom home on 0.26 acres of land to $576,000 for a three-bedroom home on 20 acres of land. Colonial Revival and ranch-style homes, built between the 1960s and 1980s, grace the landscape. New constructions reflect the Craftsman style, featuring two-car garages and space for a backyard playground.

Generations of Gizzards
Local businesses line the streets of downtown Potterville, including Joe’s Gizzard City. Since 1960, this town staple has been passing down its recipe for deep-fried chicken gizzards to the next generation. The restaurant earned national recognition with a feature on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. When going to buy groceries or household products, locals head into neighboring towns like Charlotte. After driving the 5 miles over, they check off all the items on their grocery and household necessities lists at Meijer and Walmart. For a more personal experience picking seasonal produce, like blueberries and apples, locals enjoy the offerings at Country Mill Farms. During the off-season, locals are invited to order online select apple products and shelf-stable items.

Parks that lure in the locals
The stadium lights at Lake Alliance Park illuminate the baseball field and four softball fields. Locals test their luck fishing by the lake and enjoy picnics under the pavilion. Children look at the water as they kick themselves to great heights on the playground’s swings. Over at City Park, friends challenge one another to a game of pick-up basketball on the painted cement. Meanwhile, children climb aboard the playset, affectionately known as Imagination Station. Within Potterville State Game Area, around Benton Township, hunters find pheasants and small game.

Summertime's local color
Besides the festivals and events that locals have easy access to in neighboring cities, downtown Potterville makes its own fun every summer. “There’s a festival they have every year called Gizzard Fest. They have a few crafts, music and food wagons - like a fair-type festival,” Reynolds says.
Connect to the city
Interstate 69 provides a direct route from the Potterville-Benton Township to Charlotte and Lansing. North Hartel Road (M-100) connects I-69 with downtown. With this convenient access, it does not matter if residents live in the subdivisions or on the farmlands; they are never far from Main Street dining, outdoor adventures or shopping in neighboring towns.
