Johnson & Wales University draws residents to Upper South Providence
Within a stone’s throw of one of the best hospitality schools in the world is Upper South Providence, a residential area of early 1900s homes. Renters, college kids and owner-occupants live in this Providence neighborhood, which benefits from its location near major highways and the Providence River. “It’s mostly single-family homes, and, since it’s closer to Johnson & Wales University, it has a younger crowd,” says Rhode Island Realtor Albert Hajdaraj. “It’s the college scene.”

Some of the world’s finest costume jewelry came from the Upper South Providence area. The neighborhood abuts the Jewelry District, a nationally registered historic area where companies pioneered the design and manufacturing of costume jewelry in the U.S. Manufacturing buildings for costume jewelry makers like Coro and Little Nemo still stand today. The area has has several major medical centers, including Rhode Island Hospital, Women & Infants Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital.
Locals can cross Broad Street and be in Federal Hill, a Providence neighborhood known for its abundance of Italian restaurants. Neighbors love Julian’s, an eclectic eatery with a hefty beer list and superhero figurines. They get their bikes fixed at Dash Bicycle and stop next door at the Nitro Bar for a coffee afterward. “You can walk to Nick’s on Broadway, which is a breakfast spot that’s really good,” says Hajdaraj. Ogie’s Trailer Park, welcoming visitors with its pop art sign, serves burgers and craft cocktails in a kitschy setting. For some snacks or a bag of chips, neighbors stop by Deli Pine Food Market, a local convenience store. Fresh fruits and vegetables, plus prepared foods like sushi and vegetable lasagna, can be purchased at Urban Greens Co-op Market, located 1 mile away. Trader Joe’s is also 1 mile away across the Providence River via the Point Street Bridge.
