Small but resilient neighborhood with extensive history

Situated on the east side of Pueblo, the Grove neighborhood embodies the city's historic and resilient character. In the late 19th century, the neighborhood served as a place for homes and business locations for many working immigrants from Austria, Italy, and Slovenia. It’s also a neighborhood that suffered the most from one of Colorado’s and the city’s worst natural disasters. “Grove is a historic neighborhood that got washed away in 1921 when we had the flood,” says John R. Beaupre, realtor at HomeSmart Preferred Realty and five-year Pueblo resident. “The community rebuilt the area because of the churches that stood from the flood; the people there wanted to stay close to the church.” That church Beaupre refers to is the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, which still stands in its original spot from 1920 and has become a staple for events and gatherings. Outside its history, it’s a neighborhood with convenient access to major highways, downtown, and many restaurants.

Surrounded by Arkansas and Fountain Creek River Trails

Spanning around most of Grove are numerous trails. The Fountain Creek Trail stretches 12 miles from north to south, with dirt and paved roads ideal for bikers. Another option includes the Arkansas River Trail, a 3.5-mile looped trail. Moynihan Park is a smaller park off Spring Street with a playground, basketball court and open green space. The neighborhood’s east is dedicated to Runyon Field Sports Complex and Runyon Lake. The sports complex is the premier space for Pueblo County’s youth baseball and softball, offering six fields. Besides being the primary training and playing space for youth teams, it hosts the annual Father’s Day’s “Nuch” tournament, which draws teams nationwide. Right next door, Runyon Lake is a popular spot for fishing, offering 35 acres full of rainbow trout, saugeye, and catfish. West of the neighborhood is the Pueblo Riverwalk, a major tourist attraction that offers lots of boating activities and a walkable retail area. The Riverwalk is also undergoing a $16 million expansion, which is planned to include a new boathouse and visitor center.

Smaller community with older homes

The Grove neighborhood's houses complement the area’s industrial and older feel. Most homes were built in the early 20th century, which means backyards and private garages were kept to a minimum. “It’s pretty small, and it’s only 50 homes,” Beaupre says. “Some people consider it up and coming. People move out there for the affordability.” Some homes may walk to paved sidewalks, while others may lead to a dirt path toward the roads. Ranches, bungalows, and split-level are the most common styles, but most contain less than 1,500 square feet of space. Prices range from $43,000 for an investment property and $305,000 for a two-story split.

Home to the Star Burger

Besides its handful of restaurants, Grove is convenient to plenty of other restaurants nearby neighborhoods like downtown and Bessemer. “It’s very convenient to the heart of Pueblo,” Beaupre says. The Star Bar is a longtime neighborhood bar with a casual environment with “old school” charm. Their Star Burger, which is a triple cheeseburger, is a signature favorite. Do Drop Inn is a family-owned restaurant that combines Italian and American dishes in an old-timey pub environment. Head to B Street to find the classic B Street Café, where American foods can be served in a retro dining space or a patio across the Pueblo Union Depot, which is a former train station. Many grocery stores are within a 3-mile radius in all directions, including King Soopers and Safeway.

Groovin in the Grove annual event

The Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church hosts the annual Groovin in the Grove event in July. The weekend event includes lots of food, live performers and bingo. The Waterplace Tower is another landmark that stood tall from the flood. The large brick building built in 1891 was once the trailblazing meat packing plant that transformed into an event space.

Easy access to Highway 50 and I-25

Grove is a commuter’s dream, with major roadways and several bus stops within the neighborhood. Highway 50 runs through the neighborhood, traveling east to west, reaching Avondale in 15 miles. Interstate 25 travels north to south, providing access to Colorado Springs, 44 miles, and Denver, 114 miles.
