A semi-rural suburb along the Peace River
Just next door to downtown Punta Gorda is Solana, a semi-rural suburb where houses are surrounded by tropical plants, and a few are on the Peace River. "You drive through, and there are some charming historic cottages [mixed with] million-dollar homes on the water that are very new," says William "Chad" McCrory, a Realtor with Re/Max Harbor Realty, Inc. Life is more affordable in this neighborhood than in nearby Burnt Store Isles, Punta Gorda Isles and Charlotte Park. This is mainly because most of the homes in Solana are inland, whereas in those communities, the majority back up to canals. On the weekends, local sports leagues crack the bat at Solana's recreational parks, and boaters head out into the harbor to fish. They can also dock and dine at myriad waterside restaurants just around the corner in the downtown area.

There's a public boat ramp in Solana
Solana's South County Regional Park spans 80 acres between Carmalita and Cooper Street. It offers a public pool with lap lanes, a diving area and a shallow area for kids. Locals also head to the park to play pickleball and disc golf and to work out at the indoor fitness center stocked with treadmills and recumbent bikes. Carmalita Park, off its namesake street, has a BMX track and a skate park, and it hosts local sports leagues on its athletic fields, including Charlotte County 60+ Men's Senior Softball League. The Peace River is always there. Residents store their boats in their driveways or at one of several marinas in the area. "There are several boat ramp options nearby that are free to use," says Joseph Mason, a Realtor with Re/Max Harbor Realty, Inc., who's sold homes here for five years. Darst Park Boat ramp is within 2 miles of the neighborhood, but parking is limited. Walkers and bikers can connect to waterside parks, restaurants and shops along a harborside trail in downtown Punta Gorda, less than 3 miles west. Laishley Park is a popular pit stop for its 400-foot fishing pier and 94-boat slip marina. Gilchrist Park has another smaller fishing pier and a small sandy shore. The nearest wide beaches are around 30 miles west, in Manasota Key.

Solana has a spacious feeling
Solana has an "old Florida" feeling that deed-restricted areas like Burnt Store Isles and Punta Gorda Isles don't have. Everyone's yard and home looks different, and lots are bursting with palms and tropical brush. Architecture ranges from small minimal traditional cottages to custom-built estates and conditions are mixed. While some homes may require an average amount of updating, others were hit hard by Hurricane Ian in 2022 and await repair. Modest canal or waterside properties sell for $200,000 to $500,000 but skyrocket to the $1 million to $2 million range for anything surpassing 2,500 square feet. Inland homes begin around $95,000 for a rehab project and rise to $275,000 for a move-in ready home on upwards of an acre. A selection of these are mobile homes, which settle mainly in the mid $100,000s. Ample lot sizes and open land between subdivisions give Solana a spacious feeling. The land here is low-lying, making the area prone to flooding as it's near the Peace River.
Some homes in Solana are two-story coastal style with elevated living spaces.

Drinks and views of Charlotte Harbor at TT's Tiki Bar
Last Chance Saloon is a local bar on Marion Avenue where people play pool, drink beer and wine, and can still smoke inside. There's a Publix on Tamiami Trail and a range of local waterside restaurants and bars in downtown Punta Gorda — all within 3 miles. "The food and the views from The Captain's Table Restaurant in Punta Gorda are exceptional – and the feeling of dining overlooking Charlotte Harbor. I love the prime rib and their fresh oysters," Mason says. The outdoor patio at Captain's Table is shaped like a boat, making it feel like drinks are being served on deck. Harpoon Harry's is next door with fried grouper baskets, burgers and live music on the weekends. TT's Tiki Bar is another casual spot, serving tropical cocktails in a thatched hut. People can shop in Fishermen's Village, which has women's and men's clothing boutiques and the candy store Simply Sweet, selling fudge and saltwater taffy. Celebrations at Laishley Park and Gilchrist Park
Downtown Punta Gorda has a vibrant entertainment scene. In May, Laishley Park comes alive with Memorial Day celebrations, and Gilchrist Park hosts the annual Hibiscus Festival, now in its 20th year. The festival draws in plant lovers and vendors selling tropical varieties. It also pays homage to Punta Gorda's connection to Hibiscus, a plant that blooms everywhere here. Music lovers can generally find a live show at one of the local bars and restaurants most weekends. Or, for something low-key, friends can meet up at the farmers market every Saturday year-round.
Nearby Gilchrist Park has frequent events Solana residents can enjoy.
Solana has lots of murals and artwork in the area.
