Putney offers a quiet and rural lifestyle

Vast open land, acres of pecan trees and a slower pace of life define the rural community of Putney. "I love it out here. There is so much open space. Everyone is spread out from one another," says Tiffany Vicks, a Realtor with The Real Estate Concierge and a long-time resident. With over six years of experience selling houses, she has witnessed the significant changes Albany has undergone. "It's very peaceful and beautiful. There's a lot of wildlife around, and I like that it isn't cookie-cutter like the city," Vicks says. Located 11 miles from downtown Albany, neighbors live on ample acreage close to a community park, walking trails and a classic country grocery store.

Country ranch-style homes in Putney

Acres of land extend in every direction, connected by long driveways leading to ranch-style homes built from the 1950s through the 1970s. Country cottages are set back from the road, tucked behind groves of trees. The houses sit alongside working homesteads and the occasional pecan orchard. While much of the area remains undeveloped, locals actively tend to the land, valuing its purpose. Prices typically range from $125,000 to $225,000, and additional acres are available for purchase. The southern, eastern and western edges of Putney are prone to flooding. "Termites can be an issue here, and weather has become more of a concern with hurricanes,” Vicks says. “We've also experienced power outages during those times, and I've been discussing getting a generator. I think that is something people should consider."

Putney Park has trails and a community center

Putney is surrounded by nature, with farmland and trees everywhere. "A lot of the undeveloped land is used for agriculture. There are peanut fields and tracts of pecan trees,” Vicks says. Putney Park is home to the Putney Community Center and the Southeast Dougherty Youth Sports Complex. "There's a walking trail with exercise equipment, and neighborhood cleanups help maintain the park and community center," Vicks says. She also highlights the positive changes in the area. "The county is investing a lot down here, and it feels like it's geared toward residents to improve our quality of life."

Mike's Country Store is the go-to for everything

Liberty Expressway runs through the community, providing access to Putney's small but convenient cluster of retail. Mike's Country Store is a local market offering produce, hot food, homemade pickled veggies and Georgia peach preserves. "It's a little country store that's been here for a while. It has everything, and there's even a butcher counter," Vicks says. "We have Dollar General, too. It's common in rural areas." The POB Lounge was formerly the Putney Oyster Bar and is the only restaurant in town. It's a down-home spot with dim lighting, pool tables and cheap draft beer. Putney is 17 miles from Albany Square, home to Target and Publix. "The joy of living in a smaller town is that you can live down here and still be within 20 miles of shopping," Vicks says.
