Suburban comfort meets mixed-use excitement in Six Forks

Life in Raleigh’s Six Forks combines the comforts of suburban living with the convenience of city amenities. Sidewalks line both major roads and residential streets, giving residents pedestrian-friendly access to shopping centers, diverse restaurants and well-kept community parks. The neighborhood’s mixed-use character is evident: homes occupy about half the area, while retail and industry fill the remainder. “It’s very trendy and attracts younger professionals. There’s residential mixed with business. You’ve got shopping, schools, parks and green spaces,” says Erin Van Horn, a local broker with Braken LLC who was born and raised in the area. “And it’s centrally located between two access points: Six Forks Road goes from the 440 Beltline up to 540, but traffic can be pretty brutal.” Due to its proximity to both major interstates, Six Forks appeals to commuters, as well as those who don’t mind urban expansion.

The Six Forks Road corridor has shopping centers and eateries

The retail and dining scene in Six Forks features both established shopping centers and upscale storefronts, as well as a variety of culinary options. “Six Forks is a lifestyle,” says Van Horn. “You can run to a restaurant, walk to a store; it’s like city living. You’re more in tune with stuff to do.” Six Forks Station serves as a notable hub, Whole Foods, Triangle Cinemas and fast-food outlets. For sit-down dining, Milton’s specializes in pizza and pasta. Poppyseed Market offers sandwiches, salads and a wine bar, and Sassool serves Mediterranean cuisine with market-style counter service. “The whole Six Forks Road corridor is a commercial hub,” Van Horn adds. “But good luck getting around on it on Saturdays when everyone is out doing stuff.” On the south end of Six Forks Road, the North Hills shopping area presents high-end options and niche boutiques. Duke Health provides primary care on Six Forks' south side, and Duke Raleigh Hospital serves a broader range of needs about 5 miles from there.

Single-family homes and townhomes make up the market

Six Forks offers both diversity and transformation, with a range of housing options. Traditional single-family homes, including split-levels, New Traditionals and Colonial Revivals are common, with sizes typically spanning 1,500 to 5,000 square feet. “Six Forks has a lot of older homes that people buy and either tear down or do massive renovations,” Van Horn says. “Properties have a lot of landscaping and trees, too; they have a good resale value.” Prices cover a broad spectrum, from around $300,000 up to more than $1.6 million, though the median sale price hovers near $455,000. Buyers can also find townhomes and condos, with units from roughly $190,000 to $815,000. Van Horn also mentions that high-rise apartments have been popping up throughout the community, providing a rental option.

Sanderson and other Wake County schools serve students

Public school students in Six Forks are part of Wake County Schools. They can begin at Baileywick Elementary School, which receives a B-plus rating from Niche. Parents who opt for private schooling can send their little ones to the local Chesterbrook Academy, which serves preschool through elementary grades and receives an A-plus rating. Public schoolers can advance to West Millbrook Middle School, which holds an A-minus, before graduating from Sanderson High School, which has a B-plus. The Sanderson Spartans boys basketball team had recent successful seasons, winning the 2025 Cap-6 conference title and the 2024 tournament title. The high school also offers a variety of student clubs, including forward-thinking ones like AI Club and Women in STEM.

Baileywick and other green spaces provide outdoor fun

In general, Raleigh is parks-conscious, providing several green spaces for residents to explore. Local parks in Six Forks include Baileywick Road Park, which offers covered and lighted basketball courts, a playground, baseball diamonds, paved walking trails and a dog park. Outdoor enthusiasts can access the Mine Creek Trail from the south side of the neighborhood, which connects to the city’s 120-mile greenway system. Nearby, Shelley Lake Park is popular for casual strolls around a calm lake.

I-440 and I-540 make commutes more manageable

Wedged between Interstate 440 and Interstate 540, Six Forks is well connected. I-540 leads residents to Raleigh-Durham International Airport, about 12 miles west. For those without a car, Route 8 of the GoRaleigh public bus system makes several stops along Six Forks Road.
