Gold Hills
Neighborhood in Redding, California
Shasta County 96003
Homes surrounded by greenery
As residents drive in on Gold Hills Drive, they're greeted by the golf club and lush grass on either side. Multiple winding roads branch off the main drive, each named for world-famous courses or other golf references. Fairways give way to large grassy lawns and homes shaded by pines, cedars and willows. Homes have front drives edged by manicured landscaping, and many have enough backyard space for a pool and entertainment area. Architecture varies from simple New Traditional to grand Mediterranean Revivals and contemporary Craftsman designs. Three-bedroom homes can range from $400,000 to $600,000. Larger options can cost $600,000 to $800,000 for those with the most spacious, secluded yards. There are two smaller communities up Gold Hills Drive from the golf club. One is a condo community with units that cost around $300,000. The other is Tuscany Villas, a gated community of Mediterranean rowhomes that range from $400,000 to $500,000.A-rated Shasta Union High School District
The neighborhood is part of the Columbia Elementary School District, which is rated an A-minus overall by Niche. Kids begin at Columbia Elementary and continue at Mountain View Middle, both graded a B-plus. The neighborhood is also part of the A-rated Shasta Union High School District. Students round out their education at Foothill High, graded an A-minus. Foothill students can earn college credit in dual enrollment classes with Shasta College, such as graphic design, sports medicine, and computer literacy.Gold Hills Golf Club is a big draw
Gold Hills Golf Club isn't just a draw for neighborhood residents; it attracts golfers from around the city. "A lot of people would consider it to be the nicest course in Redding," says Cadorin. This 18-hole course is open to the public and offers memberships, but residents get the full enjoyment out of it. They have a short walk or drive to the course for weekend rounds or weekday twilight practice sessions on the all-grass range. After working on their game all year, members can compete for bragging rights in the club championship. The club also hosts regional tournaments like the Northern California Golf Association Senior Four Ball.Commute on Interstate 5
Interstate 5 runs down the neighborhood's west side. Locals could take the 5 165 miles south to Sacramento, but most work around Downtown Redding. It's a 7-mile drive to downtown, which has two hospitals and recently developed businesses on Market Street. Hilltop, the city's main industrial area, is also 7 miles south. Redding Regional Airport, less than 15 miles south, offers flights to major West Coast cities, such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, Burbank and Seattle.Wildfires and high summer temperatures
Summer is prime fire season in Redding, due to the dry climate and temperatures averaging around 100 F in July and August. Small brush fires are common in the surrounding hills, but when not contained, they can grow into large wildfires. The 2018 Carr Fire was the most recent devastating fire, burning many homes in west Redding and Shasta County. Even though Gold Hills is a few miles east of the damaged area, the city encourages all residents to take steps to mitigate the spread of fires. This starts with creating a defensible space by removing flammable brush and materials from the perimeter of homes and communities. It's also crucial to have a planned evacuation route in the event of a fire.Groceries 4 miles away
Gold Hills has a spacious, secluded environment because it's a few miles removed from Redding's shopping and dining centers. Residents can eat at the Gold Hills Golf Club Grille, but the next closest establishments are 32 Below Ice Cream and Dill's Deli & BBQ, 3 miles south. Dill's Deli is a local barbeque chain that opened in 2004, and 32 Below puts a twist on the traditional ice cream shop by serving classic banana splits and waffle cones from their storefront with sleek, darkly painted walls and contemporary seating. Raley's at Lake Boulevard Plaza is the nearest spot for groceries, 4 miles south. This plaza also has eateries like Kampai Sushi and Raliberto's Taco Shop. Mt. Shasta Mall, the city's largest shopping center, is less than 7 miles south on Interstate 5. The mall has many retail outlets, larger department stores such as Target and specialty groceries at Trader Joe's.
