Growing suburbs 2 miles from Mercy Medical Center
For practical reasons, many residents choose Starlight for its 2-mile commute to Mercy Medical Center, one of Redding’s largest employers. Its residential communities have historically been a bit under the radar, but that's beginning to change. "This has been an area in transit," says Realtor Hans Monvik with Re/Max of Redding, who's been selling here since the 1990s. "There’s a lot of renovation going on.” The neighborhood’s moderate pricing and elevated views have encouraged buyers to revamp existing homes over the last few decades. During this time, the neighborhood has also seen the development of new homes. “The range of prices has widened as the options have grown, so it’s appealed to more and more people over the years,” says Monvik. It’s also grown because of its location. In addition to the quick commute to Mercy Medical, residents are only 3 miles from Redding City Hall and the heart of downtown.

Growing suburbs and a wide range of prices
The neighborhood has a variety of residential areas, from compact grid streets near the train track on the east side to sprawling suburbs toward the west. This also creates a wide range of prices. The train tracks and Railroad Avenue on the east side don't have constant traffic, but they make it a bit noisier than the west side. On these streets off Railroad Avenue, small cottages and ranch-style homes sit close together with a bit of front and backyard space. They range from $150,000 to $350,000. Much of the area's newer development has occurred in the suburbs on the west side. Indian Hills is the largest suburb, with several long winding drives and extending cul-de-sacs. Residents can take sidewalks to the community park and many homes back up to natural hillside, giving added privacy. The community's 1970s ranch-style and split-level homes remain from its original development, ranging from $300,000 to $450,000. Many buyers have updated these older homes with new interiors, backyard pools and decorative landscaping to increase curb appeal. Larger New Traditional homes were built in the 2000s, ranging from $500,000 to $800,000. Eagle Ridge is a smaller suburb on the south end. Its 2000s New Traditional and Mediterranean-inspired homes sit along wide streets with manicured lawns, roomy front drives and spacious pool patios out back. These larger homes range from $600,000 to $1 million. Open lots and large development opportunities for sale around the neighborhood suburbs signal that there's more growth to come.

Wildfires and high temperatures
Redding is surrounded by miles and miles of tree-studded mountains, which often become fuel for brush fires. This is especially true in the summer when temperatures can average around 100 degrees. These can grow into large wildfires, like the 2018 Carr Fire, which burned many homes in northwest Redding, just a few miles from Starlight. Even though the neighborhood wasn’t burned, wildfires can have an unwieldy nature, so all residents should have an evacuation plan ready before a fire approaches. To prevent fires from spreading into residential communities, the city encourages residents to create a defensible space by removing dry, flammable brush and materials from the perimeter of homes.
The many trees in Starlight gives residents a natural buffer.
The Blue Gravel Mine Trail feels like its miles away from civilization, but it's not.
