Beach town between the Gulf and Boca Ciega Bay

North of Treasure Island, Redington Beach caters to beach-lovers seeking quiet coastal community on the Gulf of Mexico’s barrier islands. “Redington Beach is a beach town that feels like a neighborhood,” says Tina Terracciano, Chairperson of Redington Beach’s Parks and Recreation Board. “There aren’t too many short-term rentals creeping in, and we have a town council, community groups and residents who value getting together and knowing their neighbors.” Connected to more tourism-heavy communities and the mainland by Gulf Boulevard, Redington Beach is a residential enclave with drivable access to cultural, shopping, commuter and entertainment hubs along the Gulf and Tampa Bay.

Gulf beaches and community parks

The town’s beaches are the center of community life, kept relatively tourist-free through resident-only parking areas at public access points along Gulf Boulevard. Between the sandy beaches on the Gulf and private docks over Boca Ciega Bay, residents are surrounded by coastal wildlife and access to the water. “In October through April, people can get bonfire permits for the beaches, and during Turtle Season we watch out for nests that return each year,” Terracciano says. “Herons, osprey and bright green parakeets fly around. People walk in the sand and collect shells, they fish and boat, and at night everyone goes out to watch the sunset.” For land-based recreation, Redington Beach Town Park boasts a shaded playground, picnic pavilions and a grassy field featuring a volleyball net and soccer goal. Friendship Park is a bayside pocket park best known for hosting the Redington Beach Property Owners Association Wine & Food Gala, and several triangular pocket parks bloom with native plants, flowers and palm trees throughout the town.

Driving down Gulf Boulevard and bridges to St. Petersburg

Gulf Boulevard connects Redington Beach to barrier island destinations like St. Pete Beach and Indian Shores and is lined by Suncoast Beach Trolley stops more frequently used by tourists than residents. For access to mainland Florida, locals drive across the bridge in Madeira Beach and take Route 19 Alternate 4 miles into Seminole or 13 miles into St. Petersburg. Many residents also own low-speed vehicles for quick jaunts on local roads with speed limits of 35 mph or less.

Flood risk and insurance

All of Redington Beach is susceptible to flooding during high tides, heavy rains, tropical storms or depressions and hurricanes. Flood insurance is mandatory for many homebuyers, and newly constructed homes follow codes which require structural reinforcement and elevation above flood lines. The Town of Redington Beach also makes efforts to combat flooding by maintaining and upgrading drainage systems.
