Adventure, art and nature blend scenically in the Riverwalk District
Stepping out the door in the Riverwalk District lands one on the banks of the wild Truckee River, which drops through the middle of downtown. The Truckee Riverwalk Trail ribbons beside Class II and III rapids, linking Bicentennial Sculpture Park with a breezy lineup of restaurants, bars and murals. All of it under the bright blue skies of Nevada – and that’s pronounced neh-VAD-uh by the locals. Economically, Reno has a spring in its step – and a growing population – thanks to the many tech companies that now have a presence in the city. Reno was designated a federal Tech Hub in 2023, which opens the door for more growth and will keep Riverwalk buzzing.
Local art is sprinkled throughout Bicentennial Park in the Riverwalk neighborhood.

Breezy patios overlook the Truckee River
Residents and local workers can easily stretch their legs by the river. “It’s worth the walk,” says Chris Rose, Partnership Coordinator with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, which has an office just south of Riverwalk. “The park is really nice. People are out there jogging and walking. Under the Keystone Bridge they have a food truck rodeo on Wednesdays called Feed the Camel,” which gives a nod to Hump Day. Popular gathering spots include Hub Coffee Roasters and Dorinda’s, the latter known for its great chocolates and caramels. Fine dining by the Truckee is also an option. “If you go upstream to the shaded area, near Keystone Bridge, you’ve got an upscale bistro, Beaujolais Bistro,” Rose says. “They’ve got a seasonal menu, and we go celebrate there. They've got wild game and seafood.” Downstream, oversized Jenga, cornhole games, big views of the river and cold beer make The Eddy prime digs for a lazy Saturday afternoon.
Giant Jenga is a crowd favorite at The Eddy found in The Riverwalk.

Condos overlook the river while bungalows and cottages cluster to the west
High-rise and mid-rise apartment buildings and condo complexes, many built in the 1960s and 1970s, overlook the Truckee and hug 1st Street, which parallels the river. Bungalows, craftsman houses, Queen Ann and Tudor cottages and a Mission Revival home or two cluster between Keystone Avenue and North Arlington Avenue. Small but tidy lots are fronted by sidewalks, and the river and its leafy northern bank are just a few steps from most homes. House prices range from $405,000 to $808,000. Condominiums start at $200,000 and run to about $850,000. About 80% of the neighborhood rents. With tourists taking selfies by the oversized art, rafters bouncing through rapids and laughter rippling from patios, the vibe is festive, but it’s not a 24-hour party. The casinos a few blocks north take care of that. The CAP Index crime score for Riverwalk is 7 out of 10, which is higher than the U.S. score of 4. Robbery, burglary and car theft rate a 9.
High-rise condos like those found at Arlington Towers have amazing views over the Riverwalk.

The Truckee Riverwalk Trail connects with other parts of town
The Truckee Riverwalk Trail doubles as the neighborhood's doorstep. This multi-use trail rolls east-west beside the river and links several of the district's nine parks. Kayaks, rafts and inner tubes bounce down rapids and drop into pools punctuating the ½-mile-long Truckee River Whitewater Park. It’s easy to drop into the river from shore and join the floating fun, but water levels and safety do vary. It’s easy to watch the action from the flat rocks that hug the river. More adventure awaits in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Lake Tahoe, which are a 40-mile drive from downtown.
Large flat rocks create the perfect lounge to swim or people watch in Riverwalk.

River Fest is a three-day party across the Riverwalk District in early June. The event includes an adventure park, a costumed bike ride with music and an enormous cornhole tournament on 1st Street. For seasonal pub crawls – zombie crawl, Santa Crawl – locals are at their costumed best.
