Big city meets small town in "The Urban Hometown"
Next to the Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport and around the corner from the Mall of America sits the inner-ring suburb of Richfield. This nearly 40,000-person city calls itself "The Urban Hometown" because of its concentration of single-family homes on gridded streets, and major thoroughfares surround the neighborhood on all four sides, making it easily accessible to anywhere in the metro area. "We are an incredibly close-knit community that is super accessible for work and travel," says City Council Member Simon Trautmann. Though residents often live here for its convenience to the airport and other employers like the Mall of America and Best Buy headquarters, they enjoy a small-town atmosphere while having access to fine dining, retail shopping and other big-city amenities.
Due to its land connection to Fort Snelling, Richfield is the oldest suburb in Minnesota.
While Richfield is mostly single-family homes, townhomes have been built near Lyndale Avenue.

Low inventory in Richfield's fast-moving market
In Richfield, "Inventory is low, and homes get snapped up quickly," says Realtor Julie Desrochers, who's sold in the Twin Cities for over 14 years. "There are some places I've seen list on a Friday that are pending on Monday." On average, homes in Richfield sell after 21 days on the market, half the national average of 42 days. "The area has become more popular over the last five years because it has lower prices than some of the surrounding areas, so there is more possibility of appreciation," she says. "The area around it has become very expensive, so it's kind of the next natural place." Here, buyers can generally find single-family homes for $300,000 to $450,000 or condos for $150,000 to $300,000. "It's a first-ring suburb, so most of the development was in the '50s and '60s," says Joel Friday, who’s sold in the area for nearly 20 years. Most single-family homes are bungalows or ranch-style homes.
Minimal, traditional, and rambler-style homes represent the majority of houses in Richfield.

Richfield Public Schools, plus charter and parochial options
In Richfield Public Schools, students attend one of four elementary schools: Centennial, Richfield Dual Language, Sheridan Hills or Richfield STEM. Centennial and Richfield Dual Language received Cs on the educational review site, Niche, and Sheridan Hills and Richfield STEM received C-pluses. Then, they continue to Richfield Middle School, which received a C-plus, and graduate from Richfield High School, which received a B-minus. At Richfield High School, students can earn college credit by taking University of Minnesota courses that are offered on the high school campus. Richfield is also home to two parochial schools – Academy of the Holy Angels and Blessed Trinity – and four public charter schools – Partnership Academy, Seven Hills Academy, Flex Academy and Watershed High School.

Spending time outside at Veterans Park and Wood Lake Nature Center
Parkland is abundant in Richfield – the city maintains 450 acres of land over 23 parks. "There are a ton of incredible parks, but two really stand out: Veterans Park and the Wood Lake Nature Center," Trautmann says. "They are both amazing community resources." Veterans Park encompasses Legion Lake and features several hiking and biking paths and a permanent memorial for local veterans. "The Honoring All Veterans Memorial is really stunning; we had four jets fly by as part of our memorial service in 2023," Trautmann says. The park includes swimming and wading pools, mini golf, a playground and a year-round ice rink. At Wood Lake Nature Center, residents can explore walking trails and spot birds and other wildlife, and the area is an important educational resource, as elementary school students in Richfield Public Schools visit the center three times a year as part of their science curriculum. Trautman says the city was recently granted $15 million from federal and state governments to improve the nature center. "It will be completely updated and will be able to accommodate more kids and provide more space for retirees to go to peacefully enjoy nature." As part of this project, the city is currently designing a new Wood Lake Nature Center building.

New restaurants and big-box retail shopping
Richfield offers residents plenty of shopping and dining options within the neighborhood, and the city continues adding new restaurants to existing local favorites. "Giordano's is the place for deep-dish pizza; most of them are in Chicago," Trautmann says. He also recommends Patrick's Bakery & Café: "Bakery is kind of a misnomer, though, because they have a whole kitchen and serve beer and wine," Trautman says. Locals grocery shop at Lakewinds Food Co-op, Cub Foods and ALDI. Along Interstate 494, residents can access a variety of big-box retailers such as Walmart, Sam's Club and Target, and endless shopping awaits at the Mall of America, which is just a mile away.

The Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport and other area resources
Richfield borders the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, so buyers looking at homes on the neighborhood's eastern edge should be warned of potential noise levels. This neighborhood offers convenience to airport employees and those working at the Best Buy headquarters, which is also in Richfield. The Mall of America is just south of the neighborhood, and downtown Minneapolis is about 15 minutes away. Getting to M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital takes less than 15 minutes for most residents. Richfield has bus routes running through the neighborhood, so some residents use Metro Transit to get around.
