Just south of the James River in Richmond, Virginia, conveniently located near lush nature and the bustling city, the Cedarhurst neighborhood maintains a relaxed, residential feel.

In the heart of Cedarhurst are several established apartment communities, surrounded by residential streets with mostly single-story homes. brick ranch-style homes, Cape Cods, split levels and colonials sit on generous lots, dotted with poplars, pines and maples. Homes in this neighborhood have two to four bedrooms and average around 1,500 square feet. One draw to this neighborhood is its affordability in comparison to neighborhoods just slightly closer to the river. “A house in good condition would average just under $300,000 in this area,” says Cindy Allen, a Realtor at Metro Premier Homes. According to Allen, inventory in Cedarhurst is very low and houses leave the market extremely quickly.

Public schools in the area include Southampton Elementary School, Lucille M. Brown Middle School and Huguenot High School. Huguenot High replaced its former school building — which stood for nearly 50 years — in 2014, offering students modern facilities including a two-story media center overlooking the school’s expansive grounds. These schools belong to the Richmond Public School system, which debuted Virginia’s largest solar power energy system in 2019 and provides nearly a quarter of the school system’s energy needs.

You won’t have trouble finding greenspace near Cedarhurst, with two large parks and the James River all within two miles. Just west of the neighborhood, you’ll find Powhite Park — a 100-acre wooded area with well-maintained interconnected trails suitable for running, hiking and mountain biking. Locals call the park a best-kept secret, as it tends to be far less crowded than other parks in the area. Head southeast on Forest Hill Avenue and you’ll quickly arrive at the well-known and well-loved Forest Hill Park. Spanning 105 acres, with rolling green hills, paved paths, tennis courts and picnic tables, this idyllic park also hosts community events such as “Music in the Park,” a free concert series running from spring through fall.

Spend an afternoon sipping IPAs and ciders on the patio at The Veil Brewing Co. on Forest Hill Avenue, walkable from Cedarhurst. While you’re there, enjoy the melty quesabirria tacos at The Veil’s partner restaurant, Y Tu Mamá. Another standout on the menu is the Burrito Del Mar — a doughy flour tortilla filled with shrimp and bacon, then smothered in a creamy shrimp and cheese sauce.

Stop by gourmet market Stella’s Grocery right next door for Greek-inspired prepared foods and a curated range of snacks, beer, wine, baked goods, and more. For locally roasted coffee, don’t miss Blanchard’s right next door — and if they’re closed, you can still purchase a bag of beans at their unique coffee vending machine located right outside the door, available 24/7. Across the street, enjoy classic American fare at Riverside Tavern.

For groceries, head to Food Lion just west of Cedarhurst on Jahnke Road. More shopping, including Target, Publix, Walmart and Lowe’s are just a few miles down Forest Hill Avenue.

Arrive quickly to downtown Richmond by taking the Powhite Parkway Bridge or Boulevard Bridge, both offering sweeping views of the James River and the city skyline.
