Chimborazo
Blend of old and new homes
The neighborhood falls within the Oakwood-Chimborazo Historic District, which contains late-19th- and early 20th-century homes in styles ranging from Victorian and Queen Anne to Federal and Colonial Revival. Most of the neighborhood's housing consists of detached single-family homes with small backyards. There are also some townhouses and duplexes. “In Chimborazo, the homes have a little bit more potential," says Ernie Chamberlain, a real estate agent with Hometown Realty who lives in Richmond. “There are stately homes with basements. You don’t get that in Church Hill or Union Hill.” Chimborazo hosts a mix of historic homes with various levels of renovation and new construction. Recently built properties often feature architectural styles similar to those of older houses, maintaining the neighborhood’s character. Cars are parked on the curb, sporadic trees dot sidewalks and Chimborazo Boulevard is laid with cobblestones. Homebuyers can find a modest two-bedroom, one-bathroom property for about $250,000, while a four-bedroom, three-bathroom new build can reach up to $690,000. Most properties run in the $400,000 to $600,000 range. “You can get so much more house in Chimborazo,” Chamberlain says. There are also several apartment complexes in the area available for renters, including Lava Loft Apartments just two blocks from Chimborazo Park.Civil War history at Chimborazo Park
Chimborazo Park spans 30 acres on the neighborhood’s southern edge. Housed in a 20th-century masonry building, the Chimborazo Medical Museum lies at the top of the park. It was the site of the Chimborazo Hospital, a Confederate infirmary during the Civil War. After the war, the site became the location of a Freedman’s Bureau School. Today, visitors to Chimborazo Park can wander along walking trails that weave along the hillside, take in a 180-degree view of Richmond’s skyline or relax on a shaded bench. The Church Hill Dog Park is on the park’s eastern edge and has areas for large and small breeds. A block away, kids run around the Chimborazo Playground, where there are also basketball and tennis courts, and neighbors plant fruit, vegetables and flowers in the Chimborazo Community Garden. On the other side of the neighborhood is Bill Robinson Park, where there are pickleball, tennis and basketball courts; a baseball field; a horseshoe pit; and a playground. During the summer, camps for kids between the ages of 6 and 12 years old are often held at the park.
Franklin Military Academy and Richmond Public Schools
On the eastern outskirts of the neighborhood lies Franklin Military Academy, the first public military school in the United States. The school earns a B grade from Niche. Public school students will likely start at Chimborazo Elementary School, which has a C overall Niche grade, followed by Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, which gets a C-minus. Armstrong High School has a history dating back to 1867, a C-minus Niche grade and a Future Center that helps students create a plan for their post-graduation life, including assistance with college applications and financial aid, among other areas.Near Church Hill dining
ChimboMart, a large convenience store in the center of the neighborhood, sells everyday essentials, while nearby Farm Fresh is where residents can shop for groceries. Chimborazo is also close to the acclaimed restaurants in the Church Hill neighborhood. Alewife, just outside Chimborazo, features Mid-Atlantic seafood influenced by Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay, while its neighbor, Grisette, is known for its French dinner service of charcuterie and steak frites. In the morning, locals can walk to bakeries and coffee shops like the Fat Rabbit and Riverbend Roaster, and for lunch, there’s Union Market, where diners can order a small sandwich to eat on the outdoor patio. Inside, the corner market sells a wide selection of beer and wine, coffee and snacks. For medical services, VCU Medical Center is about 2 miles west of the neighborhood.2 miles to downtown Richmond
Chimborazo is a walkable neighborhood, but Richmond is not a walkable city, so residents may require a car to get around. About a mile from Chimborazo, just outside downtown, is an entrance to Interstate 95, which connects to Interstate 64. These interstates lead throughout the Richmond area. While there aren’t any Greater Richmond Transit Co. bus stops in the neighborhood, many are within walking distance, and the free GRTC Pulse bus travels an 8-mile route from Willow Lawn to Rocketts Landing on nearby Broad Street. For domestic flights or international travel, the Richmond International Airport is about 7 miles from Chimborazo.
