Quiet living on the edge of Chesterfield and Richmond
Situated just south of the James River in Richmond, Virginia, Oxford offers a quiet slice of suburban paradise. While options for extensive shopping and dining stretch in all directions just outside the neighborhood, Oxford itself is almost entirely residential, creating a peaceful, secluded atmosphere. “You’re close to downtown but you don’t feel like you’re in a city neighborhood,” says Wayne Gauthier, an associate broker at Joyner Fine Properties who has lived in the neighborhood for 21 years. “We still offer all those wonderful amenities and beautiful, verdant hills that other neighborhoods don’t really have.” Despite being just 8 miles from downtown Richmond, Oxford’s quiet suburban atmosphere may be at least partially due to its unique location. “Oxford has about 635 homes; about 135 of those homes are actually in Chesterfield County, the majority are in the city,” Gauthier says. “So we’re a dual-county neighborhood, and some homeowners actually own land in both.”

Quiet streets with homes in the $400,000 range
Oxford’s winding, hilly streets often see residents walking their dogs and groups of kids playing outside or riding their bikes. These streets are lined with split-levels, a diverse array of colonial designs, from Colonial Revivals to Dutch Colonials, and red brick ranch-style homes. Careful landscaping is prevalent, with many houses tucked on large lots surrounded by towering oaks, pines and maples. “Oxford has a lot of residents who really take care of their properties,” says Lucas Harnish, Realtor at Elizabeth Road Inc. “It’s an established area that has only gotten nicer over the years.” According to Gauthier, there has been an influx of younger families buying the neighborhood’s older but well-maintained homes and renovating them to update them. A small three-bedroom home can start as low as $300,000, while a large, updated four-bedroom can go for $725,000. Most homes, however, sell in the $400,000 to $600,000 range. Gauthier and Harnish agree that houses in Oxford don’t last long on the market. “They typically sell within a week or two,” Harnish says. It’s also not uncommon for homes to attract multiple offers, especially if it has been remodeled. “One of the three that I last sold, it had been meticulously redone,” Gauthier says. “I think we had 15 offers, and it went significantly over asking.”

Enjoying nearby James River parks
“The whole James River Park System is one of the really valuable features of our neighborhood,” Gauthier says. The popular network of parks features over 20 miles of lush, interconnected trails open to bikes and foot traffic — all right down the street. Locals often head to Huguenot Flatwater Park less than 2 miles from the neighborhood for its wooden boat ramp, which is perfect for getting kayaks, canoes or inner tubes into the water. It’s also a popular fishing and hiking spot. Just a little further up the river is Pony Pasture, one of the most popular spots along the river for locals to spend an afternoon swimming in the rapids or sunbathing on granite boulders. Just outside Oxford, Larus Park’s 106 acres are a popular hiking destination that’s often described as a hidden gem, weaving through woods and across creeks.

Shopping and entertainment at Stony Point Fashion Park
A 2-mile drive west brings residents to Stony Point Fashion Park, a high-end outdoor shopping mall featuring stores like Anthropologie and Chanel. It also boasts a movie theater, a popular escape room called Gnome & Raven, Stumpy’s Hatchet House for axe-throwing and several restaurants. Oxford’s eastern edge offers abundant grocery options close to home, including Publix, Target, ALDI and Walmart. About a mile away, Joe’s Inn is a popular Richmond Institution. The Natalie — a huge plate of baked spaghetti topped with mushrooms, spinach, basil, tomatoes and either meat or marinara sauce — is a local favorite. The Sonty Point Shopping Center offers a Trader Joe’s alongside a popular chef-owned restaurant called Southbound, which serves great cocktails alongside its Southern-inspired New American fare. Quiet neighborhood streets, Route 150 to I-195
Most of Oxford’s roads are small neighborhood streets, but the vaguely triangle-shaped neighborhood is rimmed by a few recognizable Richmond roads: Forest Hill Avenue, West Huguenot Road and Chippenham Parkway, also called State Route 150. From Chippenham, it takes just a few minutes to get onto the highway. It’s just 3 miles to Chippenham Hospital and 8 miles to downtown Richmond.

Oxford’s active civic association
Every year, the Oxford 5K Wellness Soiree features a run — or walk — followed by food and live music. “Our neighborhood civic association always gets together for the National Night Out in August,” Gauthier says. “We try to do fun events a couple of times a year to try to bring people out and get people more involved, knowing our neighbors.”
