Loma Colorado roughly translates to “little red hills”, and the distinctive imagery this name evokes is matched by the neighborhood’s unique arrangement of suburban homes. It is surrounded by some of Rio Rancho’s top public amenities, including the high school, the aquatic center and the massive Rio Rancho Sports Complex, and is within commuting distance of nearby Albuquerque. “Loma Colorado feels like a different world from the community of Vista Hills, even though they back up on each other,” says Realtor Jim Shive of Keller Williams, who has over 12 years of experience in the area. “All sections were done by the same builder, and each section is a little bit unique. There’s a little over 1,000 homes, and no two next to one another are identical.” Despite heavier HOA regulations than its neighbor, Loma Colorado remains appealing to prospective buyers due to retained home values and a striking appearance worthy of its name.
No two adjacent homes in Loma Colorado share the same features
Throughout the winding suburban streets of Loma Colorado, lined with drought-resistant trees and native cacti, buyers will find a range of home styles. “Each of the sections of Loma has a different name, like Loma Alto or Los Miradors,” Shive says. “In each one, the homes have some similarities, but the builder required that you have a different combination of colors and features than your next-door neighbor. There are some areas where the homes are all two-story and close together, and some where they’re all one-story and on bigger lots. There’s even one gated community, which is where the more expensive houses are located.” Bungalows and ranch-style houses populate some of these sections, while larger two-story Modern Traditional builds fill others. The smaller single-story homes, many built between 2008 and 2015, can cost anywhere from $315,000 to $450,000, while the larger homes and those in the gated part of the community can be priced between $450,000 and $800,000.

Rio Rancho's largest green space is within a mile of Loma Colorado
There is a small, shaded playground at Mesa Contena Park in the center of the neighborhood, with more extensive options like the Rio Rancho Aquatic Center and the McDermott Athletic Center located just across Loma Colorado Boulevard. “Those parking lots are always full on the weekends,” Shive says. “The Loma Colorado Library is there, too. And there’s the Rio Rancho Sports Complex, which is a huge park and one of the only areas where there’s a lot of green grass in the city.” The complex features several baseball diamonds, multipurpose athletic fields, tennis courts and a small playground.
Local eateries and regional chains along New Mexico Route 528
The closest grocery store is Albertsons Market in the Rio Rancho Marketplace, a shopping center that also has a Target for daily household necessities. Other options, including Smith’s and a Walmart Neighborhood Market, can be found on either side of New Mexico Route 528, the area’s major thoroughfare. A range of restaurants, from New Mexico staples like Dion’s Pizza to locally owned cantinas like Hot Tamales New Mexican Kitchen, also line the highway.
Music, comedy and culture in Rio Rancho and Albuquerque
Residents can head north to the Rio Rancho Events Center for concerts, stand-up comedy and New Mexico Roadrunners indoor soccer games. In nearby Albuquerque, locals can spend the weekend perusing the museums and galleries in Old Town or attending touring Broadway shows at Popejoy Hall.
Many amenities are walkable, although most residents prefer to drive
Although many amenities are technically within walking distance, the New Mexican weather is often prohibitive. “People don’t even walk to their mailboxes,” Shive laughs. Route 528 is the closest major highway, serving as a lifeline for those who commute into Albuquerque. “If anybody needs to go to work and cross the river, there’s only really one spot that crosses in Rio Rancho. That’s where Route 528 meets Route 550, which goes to Interstate 25,” Shive continues. “We don’t have a lot of east-west roads, so God forbid there’s an accident. If the main one is closed, all the others immediately back up.”
