La Sierra University connects community
La Sierra University, a Seventh-day Adventist institution has a college of arts and sciences, a school of business, a divinity school and a school of education. It has a service-oriented focus and does public outreach in the neighborhood. The office of service-learning facilitates partnerships with community groups and organizations, such as Keep Riverside Clean and Beautiful, Foothill Family Services and many of the area's public schools and churches.Visitors may access the university via the entrance off Riverwalk Parkway. The university's amenities that are open to the public include the library, which allows up to five books to be checked out by community members; the Brandstater Gallery, which holds student exhibitions and openings, and the World Museum of Natural History, which is open on Saturday afternoons with free admission. Golden Eagles basketball games and student musicals are among the events attended by neighbors of the university.
Galleria at Tyler, Shops at Riverwalk
The Galleria at Tyler, formerly the Tyler Mall, is one of the largest malls in the Inland Empire, with over 100 stores. People come to the mall from all over Riverside, as well as from out of town. "Some come all the way from San Diego because they heard about us online, or they tried it before and want to try it again," says Leena Badwan, the manager at Uncle Fluffy, a store dedicated to sweets like Japanese cheesecake and with an array of specialty drinks. People visit both the indoor mall and the area's surrounding shops which include big-box stores, assorted businesses and eateries on both sides of Magnolia Avenue. "In the mall, there's a mini playground for the kids, there's H&M and Victoria's Secret," she says. On Sundays, the Galleria at Tyler Farmers Market is held in the mall parking lot.Riverwalk Center, known as the Shops at Riverwalk, is a business park in Riverwalk, a master-planned community that brought many new residents to La Sierra in the 2000s. In addition to medical facilities and a pharmacy, there are eateries such as Messi Soul Kitchen, a soul food restaurant, and First Class Pizza and Pub, which offers vegan and gluten-free options, plus a 24-tap beer bar. La Sierra has Stater Bros. Markets, Aldi, Northgate Gonzalez Market and a Smart & Final supermarket.
Spanish- and ranch-style homes, River Oaks condos
Townhouses are priced from about $470,000 to $620,000. There are some condos, like those in the River Oaks development, conveniently located within walking distance of the Galleria at Tyler. Condos go for about $280,000 to $375,000. Townhouses and condos can come with monthly HOA fees of $300 to $432.There are several manufactured homes communities, such as Riverside Meadows, a gated community for those aged 55 and up. Rancho Riverside allows residents of all ages. Manufactured home prices typically ranging from $100,000 to $220,000.
The city of Riverside has issued yearly wildfire mitigation plans because due to risks. The Riverside Fire Department and Riverside Public Utilities (RPU) undertake community outreach and public awareness campaigns. During building and remodeling, ignition-resistant materials can be used in place of wood and other flammable materials. Preparation includes keeping extinguishers, shovels, buckets and enough hoses for building coverage. The removal of dead vegetation and regular yard maintenance, such as trimming back foliage, can help reduce the risk of fires.
La Sierra High School's pathways
Public schools include S. Christa McAuliffe Elementary School, which earns a B-minus grade from Niche. Loma Vista Middle School receives a C-plus and La Sierra High School has a B. In addition to its competitive sports and arts programs, the high school offers career and technical education pathways such as culinary arts, biomedical technology and law enforcement. Dual enrollment classes are available in partnership with Norco College, about 7 miles west of the high school.Metrolink station, RTA buses and airports
Riverside Public Transit Agency (RTA) buses stop along neighborhood thoroughfares like Magnolia Avenue and La Sierra Avenue. From the Riverside-La Sierra Metrolink Station, trains travel 55 miles west to Los Angeles, which, depending on the schedule, may be without any transfers. State Route 91 runs along La Sierra's south portion and meets Interstate 15 about 4 miles to the west. San Diego is 100 miles south via I-15.General aviation airport Riverside Municipal is nearby and it's about 15 miles to the Ontario International Airport (OIA), which is served by major airlines. OIA's telephone hotline is available for registering noise complaints, and both airports have online submission forms. LAX is 60 miles away.
Riverwalk Dog Park, La Sierra Park
Community parks with playgrounds include Collett Park and Rancho Loma Park. Riverwalk Dog Park has separate areas for big and small canines.To the north of the neighborhood, 19-acre La Sierra Park also has playgrounds, plus basketball courts and ball fields. In separate buildings at the park, La Sierra Senior Center and La Sierra Community Center provide plenty of activities to bring neighbors together.
Castle Park, downtown Riverside and events
A Riverside attraction since the 1970s, Castle Park is a carnival-style amusement park, offering roller coasters, mini golf and arcade games. About 10 miles away, in downtown Riverside, there's the Riverside Art Museum and Fox Performing Arts Center, which hosts world-famous comedians and touring musicians. The Riverside Festival of Lights runs from November through December with a light switch-on ceremony, a light displays competition, ice skating and live entertainment. In late November, the Festival of Trees is a holiday fair with decorated trees, craft vendors and dance performances. For over 20 years, each April, the Riverside International Film Festival (RIFF) screens contemporary international and independent films, including some world premieres.
