A well-connected, luxurious community in Greenwich
A mostly residential section of the affluent town of Greenwich, Riverside is a community of about 9,000 people that’s known for its luxurious suburban atmosphere. Primarily built on a peninsula that juts out into the Long Island Sound, Riverside has stately homes on quiet, tree-lined streets. “You’re going to run into your neighbors as you’re walking to school, and you’ll start to see familiar faces,” says Megan Epand, a real estate agent with Houlihan Lawrence who grew up in Greenwich. Many residents actively participate in the local PTA, which fosters a close, well-connected community in Fairfield County.

Comfortable Colonial Revivals and high-end coastal estates
Classic New England homes with pristine landscaping are on quiet streets throughout Riverside. “There are beautiful homes on a little more land. Everyone really keeps up their homes,” Epand says. Properties range from Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals to sprawling Tudor Revivals and shingled coastal estates. The median sale price in Riverside is $2.5 million, which is far beyond the national median. Since it’s a coastal community, properties in Riverside can face a moderate to severe risk of flooding.

Local parks and waterside recreation on the Long Island Sound
Public green spaces in Riverside have walking trails, sports fields and playgrounds. “You’ll see lots of kids out on the Riverside school’s playground on the weekend when school isn’t in session,” Epand says. The community also has the Riverside Yacht Club, a members-only organization with a marina and social activities. Residents are only a couple of miles from the beaches that line the Long Island Sound, where they can go fishing or swimming.

Community support in Riverside and town-wide festivals in Greenwich
Much of Riverside is family-oriented, and school PTAs play an active role in the community. Every May, residents of all ages participate in the Riverside Run, a three-mile race that benefits local PTA programs. Locals often go to downtown Greenwich for more activities, like the highly anticipated Greenwich Town Party, a music festival with food and local vendors; residents must enter a lottery to score tickets. Residents can drive about 4 miles southwest to take advantage of other Greenwich activities. “There’s a ferry that takes you out to Island Beach, that’s fun in the summer. You can just spend the day exploring the island and swimming, and they have a snack bar out there,” Epand says.

Commuter trains go to downtown Greenwich and New York City
Quiet, residential streets make up much of Riverside — though many don’t have sidewalks, Epand says it’s not uncommon to see people biking or walking their kids to school. CTtransit operates buses along U.S. Route 1, and Riverside has its own train station, where commuters board Metro-North Railroad’s New Haven line to travel to New Haven or New York City. The train also stops in other popular Greenwich areas, like Cos Cob and downtown. Interstate 95 also runs through Riverside; the route takes drivers about 40 miles to Midtown Manhattan. LaGuardia Airport, about 32 miles southwest of Riverside, is the closest major airport. Many residents work at the financial institutions and hedge fund offices near downtown Greenwich. Others commute to New York City, as midtown Manhattan is about 35 miles from the community.
