Tucked away in the easternmost reaches of St. Louis County, Riverview maintains a certain anonymity. People should know about a place where 51,000 bridge crossers pass each day. But for Riverview, like so many North County communities, it is out of sight, out of mind. “I live in North County. I don’t understand why other people don’t,” says Rebecca Harrington, a Realtor with RE/MAX who calls North St. Louis County home and sells houses in Riverview. Over the past several decades, municipalities in this part of the county have steadily shed population. With around 2,400 residents, Riverview is no different, even though more than a few house hunters might find it geographically appealing. It is 10 miles from downtown St. Louis, less than 3 miles from the bridge leading to Alton, Illinois and has spectacular views from certain vantage points. “If I were going to live in Riverview, my favorite place would be up on the bluff overlooking the Mississippi River,” Harrington says. “It’s kind of woodsy. You can walk down the bluff and go fishing.” There are boat ramps and hiking nearby and the St. Louis Zoo is ramping up a major expansion in the area. On the other hand, homes here tend to be older and smaller than many under construction in other parts of the county, and the local school district has faced performance challenges of late.

Buses run along Bellefontaine Road
With public transportation buses running along Bellefontaine Road to the west of Riverview, residents have an alternative to driving or ride shares. For drivers, Riverview remains commutable with state route 367 and Interstate 270 not more than a mile or two away. There is no direct access to those major highway systems. So, getting to them involves some effort, with motorists traveling north or south along Riverview Drive to reach them. From there, local destinations, such as the St. Louis International Airport, are reachable in 20 to 40 minutes.

Riverview locals travel to stores and restaurants
With stores and eating spots located outside the community, traveling to shop and find meals is part of Riverview residents’ reality. Most restaurants are smaller mom-and-pops a few miles away that have developed local followings in and around the area. Fast food chains are also common. The White Barn is known for its burgers and is a local favorite. Grocery shopping can be found where food places are, with Schnucks, Ruler Foods and Save A Lot rounding out the main supermarket choices. The Schnucks at Buzz Westfall Shopping Center also shares space with retail stores like Foot Locker.
