New construction anchored by a park 5 miles from the Mayo Clinic
As the Mayo Clinic expands in Downtown Rochester, even earning it the nickname "Med City," so do surrounding suburban neighborhoods. Badger Hills, found about 5 miles northwest of hospital skyways and cutting-edge research centers, is one such example. It's a composite of vinyl-sided family homes around a central, rectangular park. Especially when compared to eastern parts of Rochester, Badger Hills is still relatively undeveloped, a new frontier in the medical capital of the Midwest. To the north of the neighborhood lies a city-owned municipal golf course dating back to the 1970s. Mike Manahan, Head Golf Professional at Northern Hills, has watched a series of new housing and apartment developments go up around the course's "elevated greens and beautiful vistas," and residents tend to be "on the younger side," in their late 20s and mid-30s. Although views from some Badger Hills back lots are still relatively rural, complete with trucks, tractors and wildflowers, groceries and gas are less than a mile away along Superior Drive. In Northwest Rochester, residents enjoy a mix of quiet and convenience.

New Traditional housing surrounds a central park
Most homes in Badger Hills were built after 2005, and Realtor Lyle Andreen of Edina Realty, Inc. says New Traditional architecture is common: gabled roofs, stone detailing and two—or even three—car garages. "It's a nice community with lots of young professionals," he adds. Freshly planted trees line sidewalks, and streets are sloped, making for challenging after-school bike rides. Sale prices start in the low $300,000s and can reach up to $450,000 for the neighborhood's largest homes. Lots generally fall under a quarter acre. There's just enough space for basketball hoops and back porches, but games of soccer, tag and frisbee are taken to the neighborhood's namesake park down the street.
Badger Hills Park also offers an abundance of green space.

The Douglas State Trail and a city-owned golf course
Home to a playground and field space for soccer practice or kite-flying on windy days, Badger Hills Park is the heart of the neighborhood. Also nearby is the Douglas State Trail, which spans nearly 13 miles all the way to the small city of Pine Island. There are paved roots for cyclists, pasture views and rugged pathways for equestrians. It passes by Northern Hills Golf Course, which is open from April until November. Players can schedule tee times online, join men's and women's leagues or sign up for private lessons. "There's also a full restaurant and bar with a patio that overlooks the 18th hole," says Manahan.

Badger Hill students have public school options like Sunset Terrace Elementary, which Niche gave a B-minus, John Adams Middle, graded a C-plus, and John Marshall High (JM), which has a B. JM has a comprehensive AP Program, and students hoping to gain workforce certifications in nursing, EMT work or as a Pharmacy Technician can enroll in CTECH coursework. There's also an English Learners program for students new to the country—the Mayo Clinic attracts families from around the world—and electives in fields like Industrial Technology and Personal Finance.

Grocery shopping at Hy-Vee and slow-cooked barbeque
Hy-Vee Grocery Store off Superior Drive is about a half-mile from Badger Hills, and residents can grab a weekend breakfast at the attached Market Grille before shopping for pantry staples. Nearby restaurants include QDOBA Mexican Eats, where diners can build their own burrito bowls, and more options line Circle Drive farther south. Smoak BBQ slow-cooks meat over white oak and serves it alongside biscuits, sweet potato fries and pit beans. Kids' meals are free on Mondays and Tuesdays, and breakfast is served all day on Wednesdays. Some locals even join the restaurant's cornhole league. Andreen also recommends Five West, which has an outdoor patio. Cars refill on gas at the Kwik Trip just outside the neighborhood before driving Downtown, which has more fine dining options.

West of Badger Hills are attractions like the Zollman Zoo & Nature Center, which is open year-round free of charge and includes more than 30 species native to Minnesota. The grounds are intersected by the Zumbro River, and visitors can explore the nearby network of nature trails. Andreen highlights Downtown attractions like the Mayo Civic Center, which also serves as a home base for Eagle Brook Church, and the Rochester Civic Theatre.

Commutes to the Mayo Clinic and access to Highway 52
"Most people go to Mayo for work," says Andreen, who adds that most people opt for their personal cars over public transit. That being said, a public bus stops by the Hy-Vee every hour, and there's an IBM Mayo Park & Ride lot about 2 miles from Badger Hills. Hospital commuters can travel down Circle Drive before merging onto Highway 14, a 5-mile trip, or make the trek Downtown by way of U.S. Highway 52. Rochester's small international airport offers a limited number of direct flights—destinations include Minneapolis/St. Paul and Chicago O'Hare—but it only takes about an hour and a half to drive to the Twin Cities, less than 90 miles away. "There's a big Mayo expansion planned for the future here," explains Andreen, adding that the hospital is "Putting in a lot of new buildings and hiring new positions." Badger HIlls will only continue to grow.
