Neighborhood bars and family parks border single-family homes
On game day, locals pack into Whistle Binkies Olde World Pub, to cheer on the Minnesota Vikings, beer in hand. While decades-old trees shade playground slides and benches dot Glendale Hills Park, just a short walk away. Glendale, which shares its name with the park at its southern border, is an established neighborhood approximately 3 miles from Downtown Rochester. Primarily coveted for its convenient location--it's ideal for Mayo Clinic employees who work at the hospital’s Methodist and St. Mary’s Campuses--the community also features1990s-era single-family homes and sidewalk-lined streets. “The entire town is built on the Mayo Clinic,” explains RE/MAX Results Realtor Dane White, adding, “You can’t throw a stone and not find someone who works there. It’s the largest employer in the city, from janitorial staff to software developers to doctors, nurses and researchers.” In the morning, it takes about 10 minutes to drive down Broadway and over Silver Lake to reach the hospital’s interconnected network of pedestrian subways and skyways, and residents can look forward to the hospital's long list of free sponsored events, like: Social-ICE in the winter, Thursdays Downtown in the summer and the Riverside Music Series by the lake. Despite its proximity to downtown, Glendale remains a quiet suburban escape year-round, removed from the growing network of extended-stay hotels and hospital towers that have come to define Med City, USA.

Manufactured homes, modest ranch-style houses and spacious New Traditionals
The vast majority of houses in Glendale were built in the 1990s and early 2000s.“There’s a good mix of styles, and also a manufactured home court,” says Andrew Atwoord, a Realtor with Century 21, adding, “You’ll find split-level homes and twin homes that are pretty large.” In the western half of the neighborhood, Rocky Creek Estates manufactured homes can sell for between $70,000 and around $85,000 depending on the number of bedrooms. Here American flags and potted plants decorate narrow front stoops and cars park uncovered in shared driveways. On numbered streets like 30th and 31st, single-family ranch-style houses and modest split-levels on compact lots—often less than a quarter-acre—hover between $200,000s and $300,000. Farther east, larger, New Traditional homes with attached two-car garages and spacious backyards range in price from around $350,000 to upwards of $650,000.
Well kept lawns and hedges are the norm for the Glendale neighborhood.

Department electives, CTECH options and diversity in Rochester Public Schools
Glendale students in pre-kindergarten through second grade can attend Churchill Elementary, which earns a B-plus on Niche, before moving on to the B-minus-rated Hoover Elementary for third, fourth and fifth grades. The next stop on the public-school pipeline is Kellogg Middle, which scores a B. Century High, which is rated with a B-plus, has an agriculture department with diverse electives like floral design; classes on digital media in the English department; and CTECH options in fields like culinary management or construction. In part, because of the Mayo Clinic (which draws in employees from around the world) Rochester Public Schools are known for their diversity and kids speak a combined total of 80 different languages in their respective home.

Fan favorite rotisserie chickens and groceries at Hy-Vee
Along with Whistle Binkies Olde World Pub, where the menu includes traditional bar fare like onion rings, chicken tenders and nachos, Christopher Hus, also a Realtor with RE/MAX Results, recommends dining on the outdoor patio at Purple Goat. “It’s a fan favorite for its rotisserie chicken,” he says, but the menu also includes burgers with toppings like fried goat cheese and pickled beets. “Or you can always grab a good slice of pizza at BB’s,” he says. For groceries, locals can drive to the Hy-Vee on 37th Street, or browse big-box retailers like Target, The Home Depot and Best Buy just a few miles away in Northwest Rochester.
HyVee is where many Glendale residents do their weekly shop.

Park playgrounds, fields and protected natural areas
In Glendale Hills Park, which borders the neighborhood to the south, a central playground is surrounded by picnic tables. Across Northern Valley Drive, Northern Heights Park is larger, extending well over 60 acres. Along with a playground, it includes tennis courts, a baseball diamond, a seasonal skating rink and a trail system popular with mountain bikers and dog walkers. “Rochester is kinda blessed with a lot of park space and trails,” says Hus, adding, “There’re miles and miles of trails; it’s almost ridiculous. Walking, hiking, biking, e-scooters, whatever you can think of.” Quarry Hill Park and Nature Center is about 2 miles south. The protected natural area is home to a butterfly garden, sandstone caves and pathways for cross-country skiing. During the school year, it’s a popular field trip destination, and summertime means bug and salamander-hunting at day camps.
Bowlcity, golf simulators at Chip Shots and Downtown Festivals
During Rochester’s cold winter season, when the city accumulates close to 50 inches of snow, locals turn to indoor recreation. Bowlcity Entertainment Center cranks on its disco lights for “Cosmic Bowling” on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and there’s also a laser tag arena and onsite sports bar. Chip Shots, which is attached to Purple Goat, has a golf simulator, indoor pickleball and cornhole leagues; Mondays are half-priced. Nearby, CMX Chateau shows the latest releases, and there are always more activities in Downtown Rochester. “There’s a part of the winter where people come out to Peace Plaza near the Mayo Clinic to check out the ice sculptures and ice bars,” says Hus, describing Social-ICE, typically scheduled in late February. Space heaters and marshmallow fires help combat the freezing weather. In Rochester, summertime is live music season, and locals look forward to weekly free concerts sponsored by the clinic.

Downtown Rochester 10 minutes away
Traffic is rarely a concern in Rochester, according to Hus, especially when compared to more densely packed East Coast cities. “Out here, there’s so much space. We don’t have rush hour,” he says, adding, “There’s no stress.” From Glendale, it is about 3 miles—less than 10 minutes—into Downtown Rochester, the home base of the Mayo Clinic. Employees can use the hospital’s free shuttle service to travel between St. Mary’s and the Methodist Campus downtown. Med City’s small international airport is about 15 miles south along U.S. Highway 52, and residents can fly direct to larger airports in the Twin Cities or Chicago.
Highway 52 will bring commuters into both Rochester and Saint Paul.
Glendale is served by Rochester Public Transit and offers routes to and from downtown.
