Home to Rochester's city-run public market

Marketview Heights is where people buy oranges, basil and cookies at the public market. They live in Victorian-style homes from the turn of the 20th century and have easy access to downtown Rochester and the city’s Amtrak station. “Marketview Heights is a community that cares about its residents, and we’re making an effort to help the town grow,” says Eric Kittles, manager at the neighborhood’s David F. Gantt Recreation Center.

Community gardens and planned Genesee River park

Kids can get homework help at the recreation center, which also has a children’s music program, sports leagues and clinics to promote socio-emotional activities. Adults can use the fitness center and take cooking classes in its kitchen. “We try to help the community out by giving them opportunities they might not find elsewhere,” says Kittles. First Street Park has a playground and basketball courts, and people plant flowers and vegetables at the Market Gardens. High Falls, the tallest waterfall in Rochester along the Genesee River, is east of the neighborhood. A state park to increase public access to the waterfall and the river gorge is in the works. “It’s beneficial for people’s physical, mental and emotional well-being to get outside, and we want this to be a park for everyone,” says Helen Dumas, director of urban engagement at the Genesee Land Trust.
