Northeast Rochester

Northeast Rochester is a historic and modern multicultural community

Northeast Rochester, also called Group 14621 after its ZIP code, is a neighborhood just north of the Flower City’s downtown. It's part of a crescent of neighborhoods connected by shared histories of working-class immigration, eventual white flight and poverty. Despite long periods of disinvestment, the community’s leaders and local organizers have worked to pocket Northeast Rochester with businesses and community spaces, especially those serving the many Latin American families that have put down roots over the last several decades. This medley of local cultural influences pairs with lower-cost homes that are only a handful of miles from some of Rochester’s most active recreation areas and event spaces. “You’re close to things like the Public Market and the Memorial Art Gallery in Northeast Rochester. Some of the homes are colorful or have Victorian details so that it can be almost like a budget version of the Neighborhood of the Arts,” says Daniela Polister, a real estate salesperson at Empire Realty Group who’s specialized in Rochester for 12 years.

A mix of historic homes on the neighborhood’s blocks

Northeast Rochester’s residential blocks are lined by sidewalks, shady trees and a mix of prewar homes built on closely packed lots. Many homes are simple National styles that were popular around the turn of the 20th century. Buyers can also find more ornate Victorians and Colonial Revivals from the same era and ranch-style homes built into the midcentury. Single-family homes can sell for about $10,000 to $280,000, depending on whether they need to be fully gutted or are more than move-in ready. Multifamily homes sell for around $40,000 to $380,000, depending on their renovation needs and number of rentable units. Most residents rent rather than own their homes. Northeast Rochester has a CAP Index Crime Score of 6 out of 10, slightly higher than the national average of 4. Some violent crime scores are significantly higher than average.

School choice in Rochester’s Northeast Zone

Students can attend any of the Rochester City School District’s Northeast Zone or Citywide schools. Kids may start at Roberto Clemente School No. 8, which earns a C-minus from Niche, before moving on to Dr. Freddie Thomas Middle School, which is not currently graded by Niche. Padilla High School was renamed in 2024 and scored a C-plus under its old name of Franklin Upper School. At Padilla High, kids interested in firefighting and law enforcement can take specialized classes through the career pathways to public safety program.

Puerto Rican restaurants and nearby shopping

Rochester was one of the main landing spots for Puerto Rican immigrants in the latter half of the 20th century, something that Northeast Rochester’s scattered, locally owned restaurants make clear. The brightly painted Borinquen Bakery and Restaurant specializes in sweet and savory Puerto Rican staples. El Pilon Criollo is a takeout spot that began as a booth at a Puerto Rican Festival. Dollar and corner stores stock limited groceries around the neighborhood. Walmart and other big-box and grocery stores anchor a much denser strip mall commercial district along Ridge Road.

Walking, driving and busing around Rochester

“It really doesn’t take more than 20 minutes to get anywhere in Rochester,” Polister says. Downtown Rochester is about 2 miles away by car or Regional Transit Service bus. The neighborhood’s many sidewalks and handful of bike lanes offer more active ways to get around town. Rochester Regional Health Rochester General Hospital is within 2 miles of home, and Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport is closer to 8 miles away.

Cultural and service events around Northeast Rochester

Rochester’s center for Latin American cultural events is just outside of Northeast Rochester at the International Plaza. The open-air event space hosts frequent events throughout the year, from smaller karaoke and salsa dance sessions to larger celebrations like Cinco de Mayo. St. Stanislaus Kostka Church is one of many multilingual churches in the neighborhood, and is known for hosting a pierogi, vendor and bouncy house-filled Polish Arts Festival each summer. While houses of worship often host service events in the neighborhood, the city’s Northeast Quadrant Neighborhood Service Center also connects residents to social services and grant funding for community betterment projects.

Parks, recreation centers and a zoo up the Genesee River

Pulaski Park is a pocket of paved walking paths and tree-dotted fields in Northeast Rochester. At Avenue D Recreation Center, locals hit the outdoor playground and athletic courts or spend time at the indoor gym. Residents might head to Conkey Corner Park to enjoy the playground or bike through along the El Camino Trail. Seneca Park is about 4 miles up the Genesee River, home to miles of forested hiking trails and the Seneca Park Zoo.
