Johnson Ranch

Johnson Ranch Sports Club and Maidu Regional Park
Residents can walk to Johnson Ranch Sports Club, a recreation center that brought this community together for over 30 years. “Whether it’s tennis, pickleball or swimming, it’s a family away from the family,” says Kevin Elcock, who’s worked at the club’s front desk for over two decades. “Members see each other on a regular basis so they become familiar and comfortable with each other. Before you know it, they’re meeting up for more activities.” Among many amenities, its northern facility has 25 tennis courts and two weightlifting areas. The southern facility, across Eureka Road, has 28 pickleball courts and a game room. Club events include Member Appreciation Day in summer and the Ho Ho Ho-Down pickleball gathering in December.Neighboring Lockridge Park has a playground and shady benches, and it’s next to the soccer field at Excelsior School. Only a half mile west, Maidu Regional Park provides 150 acres of open lawns and walking trails. The grounds have fields for baseball, cricket and soccer, and Maidu Community Center can be rented out for private events. The Center is adjacent to the Maidu Museum & Historic Site, where visitors can learn about the Maidu people through interactive exhibits and petroglyph walking tours. For a day on the water, Folsom Lake is about 5 miles east, and it spans 11,500 acres.
All A’s: Eureka Union, Roseville Joint Unified School Districts
Johnson Ranch falls under the Eureka Unified School District, where students consistently score above county and state averages. Rated an A-minus by Niche, Maidu Elementary is just west of the neighborhood and serves kindergarten through third grade. Excelsior School is likely the next step for grades four through six: it’s on the north side of Johnson Ranch and gets an A-minus as well. For grades seven and eight, Olympus Junior High is a mile north and receives an A rating. Grades nine through 12 are under the Roseville Joint Unified School District, another high-ranking district. Here, Granite Bay High scores an A-plus and ranks as Niche’s No. 1 public high school in Sacramento. Its boy’s baseball team won the Boras Classic in April 2024, competing against some of the toughest teams in Northern California. After high school, students could stay close at Sierra College. It’s only 5 miles north of the neighborhood and offers 150-plus degree and certificate programs.Craftsman and Mediterranean homes, single- and double-stories
Most homes were built in the 1990s, but buyers can find everything from the 1980s and 2020s. As a result, subdivisions feel different from one to the next. Northern communities such as Courtside showcase the Craftsman style, featuring multi-pitch roofs and white trim. In the south, the gated community of Ashley Ranch has Mediterranean-style homes with pillars and tile roofs. One- and two-stories mix together in either case, and square footages vary widely. Lots are bigger than northern neighbors in Olympus Pointe but are smaller than Maidu and Orangevale. Two-bedroom homes are priced between $460,000 and $550,000. Three-bedroom homes go between $575,000 to $965,000. Four-bedroom ranch-styles start at $725,000 for less square footage; four-bedroom estates can reach $1.3 million, and they usually have two stories. While four-beds are scattered throughout the neighborhood, pricier homes are mostly south of Old Auburn Road. “You get one bill per month with Roseville utilities,” says Suzzane Owen, a Sacramento Realtor for over 20 years. “That’s a big deal for a lot of people. The city handles our electricity, sewer, water and garbage. And people in Sacramento have to separate their trash, but we don’t have to.” Renters make up half of this market, and there are some apartment complexes north of Eureka Road.Renaissance Creek, Roseville Center and Placer Center Plaza
In the northeast corner of Johnson Ranch, the Renaissance Creek shopping center caters to everyday needs. Safeway and Walmart Neighborhood Market are grocery chains here, and they’re next to fast food spots such as Round Table Pizza and Jack’s Urban Eats. Driving west on Douglass Boulevard, Roseville Center and Placer Center Plaza offer department stores and more quick bites. Shoppers can find TJMaxx, Petco and Target in these complexes, and foodies can check out the 1950s atmosphere at The Original Mel’s Diner. Near the Johnson Ranch Sports Club, Final Gravity Taproom & Bottleshop is a sports bar that specializes in West Coast and Belgian beers. About 4 miles west, Downtown Roseville is a walkable district with more businesses. “When we first moved here, there were about two restaurants,” says Kevin Elcock. “But now you have unlimited choices since Old Roseville has really come alive. The City of Roseville provides free parking, and that has attracted a lot of people.”Close to Kaiser Hospital, Roseville and Sacramento
Pedestrians can use narrow sidewalks in subdivisions, and bikers can use dedicated lanes on major thoroughfares. Most people drive, though, as they commute to surrounding employment hubs. Eureka Road leads a mile north to Kaiser Permanente Medical Center and 4 miles into downtown Roseville. Douglass Boulevard has a ramp onto Interstate 80, which leads 20 miles into downtown Sacramento. This trip takes 30 minutes with usual traffic, but rush hour can increase travel time. The Roseville AmTrak station provides another option to downtown, and it connects to the Route L bus into Johnson Ranch. This trip usually takes an hour and a half, though.
