A commuter village with water views in Lake County
Round Lake Beach is a working-class suburb about 50 miles northwest of Chicago. It started as a summer getaway, but over the years became full-time home for about 28,000 residents who want affordable housing and an easy commute into the city. The village sits along Round Lake, which still draws boaters and anglers, but most people here are focused on daily life — commuting, raising families and staying connected to nearby suburbs such as Grayslake, Libertyville and Gurnee.
The mix of long-time residents and newer transplants gives the town a down-to-earth feel, says Mayor Scott Nickles. “Round Lake Beach is a hardworking, tight-knit community,” he says. “People move here for the affordability, but they stay because of the relationships they build with their neighbors.”
