Round Lake Beach is a working-class suburb about 50 miles northwest of Chicago. It started as a summer getaway, but over the years became full-time home for about 28,000 residents who want affordable housing and an easy commute into the city. The mix of long-time residents and newer transplants gives the town a down-to-earth feel, says Mayor Scott Nickles. “Round Lake Beach is a hardworking, tight-knit community,” he says. “People move here for the affordability, but they stay because of the relationships they build with their neighbors.”
