Historic rural village surrounded by mountain and the Santa Fe National Forest
Around 24 miles south of Santa Fe, at the eastern end of the Glorieta Pass, La Cueva is a rural village of ranches and private estates amid the Santa Fe National Forest and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Residents enjoy the privacy, natural spaces and relative affordability of this rural area, which scores a low 1 out of 10 on the CAP Crime Index, compared to the national average of 4. In the 1800s, La Cueva was crossed by the Old Santa Fe Trail, a popular route for pioneers bound for new lives in the American West; today, that trail is known as Interstate 25. "Here you see these homes scattered along Glorieta Creek, where people get to use the land and are surrounded by mountain views," says James Congdon, a Santa Fe local and Associate Broker with Santa Fe Properties. "It feels like nothing much has changed in over a hundred years.”

Creekside manufactured homes and custom builds amid mountain hills
Surrounded by mountain foothills and ponderosa pines, La Cueva’s homes sit on vast acreage used for gardens, horse stables, and guesthouses called casitas. Most properties are two- to three-bedroom manufactured homes from the 1990s and early 2000s, set along the central Glorieta Creek and its acequias, or irrigation ditches; common features include pitched metal roofs and wooden patios. Lots are typically 1 to 3 acres of grassy slopes, and depending on a home's lot size, prices range from $260,000 to $460,000. In the heavily forested north and south, 21st-century custom-built homes either have Santa Fe-style features like flat roofs and stucco exteriors, or they resemble log cabins, with pitched roofs and hewn-log exteriors. Most sit on 10 acres or more, and their seclusion and views of the Glorieta Pass influence prices that range from $615,000 to $800,000. Undeveloped land is also available: flat 1-acre lots along Glorieta Creek can fetch $65,000, while hilly, 30-acre parcels can reach $200,000.
Some La Cueva properties have been used for farming and other agricultural uses.

Ski basins and historic parks in the Santa Fe National Forest
La Cueva sits in the 1.5 million-acre Santa Fe National Forest, where the Glorieta Pass crosses through the Sangre de Cristos’ foothills. “It’s so beautiful here during the winter, with all the tall pinyons covered in snow,” says Andrea Dobyns, a born-and-raised Santa Fe Realtor with EXP. Just south, the roughly 400-acre Glorieta Mesa is framed by steep cliffs and covered with aspen groves; the 8-mile Glorieta Mesa Trail here has stretches of four-wheeler roads, hiking paths and fields of yellow-flowered shrubs called rabbitbrush. La Cueva also sits within the Pecos National Historic Park, its 6,500 acres stretching further east into the Sangre de Cristos; the 2-mile Glorieta Pass Battlefield Trail here sits in La Cueva and crosses through hills of towering aspens. The historic park is better known for the Pecos Pueblo ruins, which lie about 2 miles east of La Cueva and date back to the 12th century.

Shopping and dining south of Santa Fe
"There's practically zero businesses out here, but that's fine because that's not what people move here for," Congdon says. There's a Dairy Queen and a Phillips 66 gas station about 2 miles from La Cueva, but according to Congdon, residents tend to head 14 miles west to Eldorado for shopping and dining. The Eldorado Supermart in Eldorado is La Cueva’s closest grocery store, set across the street from eateries like Bite Me Bakery, Fusion Tacos and the Santa Fe Brewing Company Eldorado Taphouse. Additional shopping and dining options can be found in Santa Fe 24 miles northwest; according to Dobyns, Interstate 25 makes this a short drive.

Flooding and wildfire risks in the Glorieta Pass
La Cueva's setting in the Glorieta Pass makes it susceptible to flooding and wildfires. Areas along Glorieta Creek are in a category A flood zone, as rain waters can rush down from the mountains and form flash floods in the passage. The Santa Fe County Community Wildfire Protection Plan also deems La Cueva a high risk for wildfires; the community is served by the Glorieta Pass Volunteer Fire District, whose station lies in the Village of Glorieta, around 3 miles west.
