Glen Elder
Lower average home prices
Ranch-style homes sit along sidewalk-lined streets. Built between the 1950s and ‘90s, these typically feature stucco or brick exteriors, cross- and front-gables roofs, up to two-car garages and yards large enough for flower beds and mature trees. Newer models feature Mediterranean elements, such as tiled roofs. Sizes range from 88- square-foot two-bedroom homes up to 1,500-square-foot home for four bedrooms. Prices range about $150,000 less than much of Sacramento. “You have some properties that need updating and others that have already been updated,” says Paul Boudier, Realtor with Keller Williams Realty and Sacramento native. “If you take a three-bedroom that has not been updated but is well-preserved, it’ll be in the $290,000 to $310,000 range. Properties with larger square footage and renovations will be in the low to mid-$400,000s.”JROTC at Hiram W. Johnson High School
Two school zones split the neighborhood. In the northern end, local kids may attend Sacramento City Unified district schools, including Elder Creek Elementary, which earns a B-minus from Niche, and Will C. Wood Middle, which earns a C-plus. At B-minus-rated Hiram W. Johnson High, students can join the JROTC academy. In the neighborhood’s southern end, kids may attend Elk Grove Unified district schools, including Samuel Kennedy Elementary and James Rutter Middle, both earning a B-minus from Niche. At B-rated Florin High, students can join the Audio and Music Productions program, where they’ll learn about digital music production and studio recording techniques.Access to a nearby freeway and short drives to area attractions
Glen Elder borders Power Inn Road to the east, beyond which it becomes more industrial. Lemon Hill Avenue and Elder Creek Road runs through the neighborhood’s northern end. Golden State Highway (State Route 99) sits about 4 miles west, which leads to downtown Sacramento, and the El Dorado Freeway (U.S. Route 50) is a 5-mile trek north. Residents here are a short drive to popular area attractions. “There are a lot of things to do outside, whether you go to the park in Folsom or to the Sacramento Zoo,” says Boudier. “Glen Elder is in the middle of all of those.” Sacramento Regional Transit bus services are offered here, with stops along Elder Creek Road and 75th Street. Designated bike lanes run along main thoroughfares, with one bicycle-friendly road centrally. Kaiser Permanente South Medical Center is about 5 miles south, while Sacramento International Airport is roughly 21 miles northwest via Interstate 5.Fitness classes, rugby and tennis at nearby recreational areas
Parks and recreational areas sit in the neighborhood’s northwest corner and southern end. The George Sim Community Center is home to senior fitness classes and teen gatherings. Their banquet halls can be rented out for private parties. A pool, weight room and a baseball field for little league games are also available here. The roughly 12-acre Danny Nunn Park features rugby and soccer fields, as well as a shaded picnic area. Folks can share their love for gardening at the park’s 20-plot community garden. Camellia Park sits less than a mile west of the neighborhood and offers tennis courts and a baseball and soccer field.Locally sourced ingredients at Emma’s Tamales
Restaurants are located just outside of the neighborhood. To the east, family-owned Emma’s Tamales takes Sacramento’s slogan “Farm-to-Fork" to heart by using organic and locally sourced ingredients. Toward the south, Burger Junction, a counter-serve eatery, offers charbroiled hamburgers, specialty sandwiches and Halal plates. Grocery options include locally owned Del Valle SuperMarket about a mile from Glen Elder, and Elder Creek Market. The nearby Florin Towne Centre features big-box stores like Walmart, and barbecue and Chinese restaurants.Annual Tree Lighting with Santa
While there aren’t community activities in the neighborhood, Sacramento offers annual and seasonal events. Every November, the Piazza Palladio’s Annual Tree Lighting takes place near Folsom. “Everyone is welcome to come to this free, family-friendly event,” says Julie Gatti, Palladio’s marketing director. “We offer tap and ballet performances from local schools and cookies and sparkling cider from Barns & Noble Kitchen.” Santa reads ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas on stage before lighting the over 20-foot-tall Christmas tree.Slightly higher crime rates than the national average
Glen Elder’s CAP Index Crime Score is 5 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. According to CrimeGrade, the neighborhood’s crime rate is 57 incidences per 1,000 residents during an average year. The chances of being a victim of crime is higher in Glen Elder’s northern end, and residents typically feel the neighborhood’s western portion is the safest.
