“There are good-sized lots here, as big as an acre,” Kalteis says. “And many of the homes, which are already really big, have been added to.” Most homes in Marie-Gordon Heights are well-maintained midcentury ranch-style homes with three or four bedrooms, shingled roofs and partial stone exteriors; some have Spanish-style details like barrel-tiled roofs. Spacious lots tend to be lushly landscaped with manicured shrubbery and mature maple and pine trees, and some also have entry gates and winding driveways.When these three-to-four-bedroom homes have lots of less than a half-acre, their prices range from $600,000 to $1.1 million, while those with lots of a half-acre to an acre range from $1.3 million to $1.8 million. Homes on these larger lots that have five or six bedrooms in about 3,500 square feet range from $2 million to $3 million.

Set next to the sought-after Jesuit High School
Just south of Marie-Gordon Heights, the all-boys Jesuit High School is one of three private Catholic schools in Sacramento; rated A-plus by Niche, the school has a dedicated computer science program, as well as a Science Olympiad club. Local public schools include the A-minus-rated Mariemont Elementary School, the B-plus-rated Arden Middle School, and the A-minus-rated Rio Americano High School; the latter has won 13 Sacramento County Mock Trial Championships and offers Japanese up to the International Baccalaureate level.

Local parks and picnics on the American River
The nine-acre Valley Oak Park, set on Marie-Gordon Height’s west side, is popular with pet owners for its two dog parks, one for small breeds and another for large dogs. There are also biking and jogging trails, two playgrounds and baseball diamonds, which host the Arden Little League team. A few miles south, the American River is a well-known destination for activities such as whitewater rafting and fishing for king and silver salmon. The William B. Pond Picnic Facilities sit on the waterfront for those who want to get together within view of the riverbanks.

Restaurants serving comfort food just north
Just northwest of the neighborhood, the Arden Plaza Shopping Center has Whole Foods and Bel Air grocery stores, plus a Starbucks and the 19 Handles Pub & Grill, a local favorite for fish and chips and beer. Five Points Shopping Center, just northeast, is home to Matteo’s Pizza & Bistro, which features an outdoor dining space adorned with fairy lights.

Secluded from major highways, 9 miles from downtown Sacramento
Marie-Gordon Heights is secluded from highways and interstates; the nearest Interstate 80 interchange is more than 5 miles away, and Route 50 is on the other side of the American River. Downtown Sacramento is about 9 miles west, also accessible by local Sacramento Regional Transit bus routes. Major roads bordering the neighborhood, like Arden Way and Fair Oaks Boulevard, are lined with bike lanes. The nearest hospital, Kaiser Permanente Sacramento Medical Center, is less than 3 miles away, while the Sacramento International Airport is about 20 miles away.Community get-togethers at Arden Park
Arden Park, found just west, hosts occasional events like the annual Fall Festival, which features craft booths, food trucks and a beer garden. During the festival, kids can enjoy the petting zoo, pumpkin patch and carnival games, while the Arden Park Garden Club holds its perennially popular plant sale.
