Med Center is named for UC Davis Medical Center

Med Center is a Sacramento neighborhood named after the University of California Davis (UC Davis) Medical Center. “The hospital is not just a regular hospital; it’s a teaching hospital,” says Realtor Leah Garrison with Keller Williams Realty, who has worked in the area for about three years. The hospital is ranked as the No. 1 Best Hospital in Sacramento by the U.S. News & World Report and has held that title for over a decade. Many people living in Med Center work at UC Davis or its neighbor, Shriners Children’s Hospital. Residents can find stores, restaurants and parks a couple of miles from home, and downtown Sacramento is only about 3 miles away. Students attend Sacramento City Unified School District, which receives a B from Niche.

Locals can walk to UC Davis

Sidewalks fill most of the neighborhood, making it easy for hospital employees to walk or bike to work. They can also take the bus, which is managed by Sacramento Regional Transit. U.S. Route 50 borders the neighborhood, which can lead to higher noise levels. Sacramento International Airport is about 14 miles away.

Older homes near the hospital

Many of the houses in Med Center sit at the front of the lawns, which are decorated with bushes and gardens. The tree-lined streets are filled with cars that cannot fit in the narrow driveways and detached garages. “That neighborhood has homes dating back to the early 1900s,” Garrison says. The older properties include Craftsman, bungalow and Tudor styles, although some new traditional houses have a mix of stucco and vinyl exteriors scattered throughout. Prices tend to range from $425,000 to $650,000, although some properties can cost more than $700,000. “Homes near the hospital tend to be more expensive,” Garrison says. With so many interns coming and going from the neighborhood, many residents live in rental properties.

Local restaurants and downtown shopping

Locals can order a meal from Fixins Soul Kitchen, known for their comfort food, or Darbar Halal, which serves Afghani food. While at work, UC Davis employees and students can grab a quick breakfast from the Scrubs East Cafe. People can also travel downtown for dinner at Iron Horse Tavern, which adds a twist to classic American dishes. Residents can get groceries from Safeway and Trader Joe’s, both about 2 miles away, and can find more retailers at the Downtown Commons (DOCO), about 3 miles away. Besides featuring department stores, such as Macy’s, and eateries, including Yard House, DOCO is home to the Golden 1 Center, a basketball stadium that doubles as a concert venue. Home Depot, Walmart and Target are all within 4 miles of Med Center.

McClatchy Park is near Med Center

While few parks are near the hospital grounds, Garrison says, “there are several parks surrounding the area.” McClatchy Park is about 2 miles outside the neighborhood and sits on the site of a former amusement park. Now, it features a skatepark, walking path and colorful play area with homages to the park it used to be. For something a little closer to home, families can bring their kids to Fourth Avenue Park for a picnic and some fun at the playground.

Farmers markets and the Farm-to-Fork Festival

The Oak Park Farmers Market is held at McClatchy Park every Saturday morning from April to November. Besides offering fresh produce, the market regularly hosts free yoga and cooking classes. Med Center residents can also attend city events, such as the Farm-to-Fork Festival, which features a lineup of musicians and celebrates the city’s culinary and agriculture.

Students attend Sacramento City Unified Schools

As part of Sacramento City Unified School District, students can start at David Lubin Elementary School, which earns a B-plus from Niche and teaches kindergarten through sixth grade. They can complete seventh through 12th grade at B-rated Umoja International Academy, which offers the International Baccalaureate Middle Years and Diploma Programmes. Sacramento Charter High School is a public charter that receives a B that introduced a dual enrollment program with Sacramento City College in fall 2023.
