In the Pocket
Pocket-Greenhaven is a hamlet located 6 miles from downtown but set apart from the city by a curve of the Sacramento River — earning the area the affectionate name “The Pocket.” This community offers a secluded residential and outdoor lifestyle with access to the city along Interstate 5. Neighbors may be prominent politicians, famous comedians or NBA players with the Sacramento Kings. In fact, actor Eddie Murphy used to call the Pocket his home.

Waterfront suburban lifestyle
Many homes in Pocket-Greenhaven have waterside views, either along the river or the two lakes nearby. Waterfront properties with sprawling contemporary builds go for over $1 million. But most homes in this community range from $650,000 for renovated mid-century ranchers to $900,000 for custom-built four-bedroom homes. Some homes embrace a tropical feel with Mediterranean tiled roofs; others have a more Tudor influence. Streets are lined with trees and sidewalks, and many communities are gated. With tight rows of houses and manicured front yards, the Pocket offers a more suburban feel than other neighborhoods outside downtown Sacramento. And most homes have attached garages or driveways for easy parking.

Riverside recreation
One of the primary attractions of the community is its proximity to the Sacramento River, one of the region’s best places to enjoy jet skiing, swimming or fishing for salmon. The river is lined by levees to prevent flooding, and the city has several ongoing projects to bolster the levees. The city also has plans to build a walking and biking trail along the top of the levee curving around the Pocket, but the project is still in its early stages. For now, the area features more than 10 community parks, including the 18-acre Garcia Bend Park, which has a boat launch and pickleball courts. At the centrally located Portuguese Community Park, kids can climb structures shaped like fish and a pirate ship.

Magnet high schools for STEM and Criminal Justice
The area is part of the Sacramento City Unified School District. There are a couple of elementary and middle schools in the area, with Genevieve F. Didion TK-8 School earning the highest rating, an A-minus from Niche. Most teens in the Pocket attend John F. Kennedy High School, which receives a B-plus rating. Kennedy High students can participate in a Criminal Justice Academy, which teaches forensic science and investigative procedures. The academy partners with the Sacramento Police Department, and completing the program can lead to a career in law enforcement. The Pocket is also home to the School of Engineering and Sciences, a magnet school with STEM specialties that requires an application.

Tight-knit community
The Pocket-Greenhaven Community Association plans regular events at Garcia Park, like movie nights and food trucks with live music. They also provide scholarships to local students and encourage members to patronize local businesses by offering discounts. Elks Lodge 6 is the site of a seasonal farmers market, and residents celebrate the Fourth of July with a parade. “It’s hard to match the community vibe there,” explains Mark McDonough, a Coldwell Banker Realtor with eight years of experience in Sacramento. “It’s a charming area that people fall in love with.”

Global eateries
At the entrance to the Pocket, Sacramento's largest water tower is adorned with the words “Welcome to Sacramento — America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital.” Despite the iconic water tower, the Pocket isn’t necessarily a top-of-the-list foodie destination in Sacramento. For a suburban neighborhood, though, there is a pretty solid selection of global eateries. Cacio’s is a sit-down place for Italian food, and Sai Varee Thai is known for its authentic Thai flavors. Enjoy a taste of Cuba at Bodega Kitchen & Cocktails, which has a colorful interior and occasional live music nights. Device Brewing Company offers a Made in Sac IPA for beer enthusiasts, and Hop Junction provides Indian food and a wide selection of brews. And spread even throughout the community are Nugget Markets, Bel Air and Grocery Outlet, ensuring every resident is within a mile of a grocery store.

Commuting to downtown
And for those who want to be closer to work, the Pocket is 6 miles away from downtown. “Pocket-Greenhaven is a super popular area with people that work in downtown Sacramento,” McDonough explains. “It’s an area that seems far from the city due to its vibe, but it isn’t.” No car? No problem — Pocket Road is on the main route for the Sacramento Regional Transit light rail system and has bus lines running throughout.
