Hidden gem for budgeters and commuters
Just east of midtown Sacramento, this suburban-commercial neighborhood often gets overlooked. “Not many people are going to know about Tahoe Park East or that it’s called something different than Tahoe Park,” says Nick Gonzales, a Realtor with Elevate Realty Group since 2017. But this community east of 65th is, in fact, its own thing. And while it’s not as popular as its neighbors to the west, this hidden-ness is perhaps its biggest draw. Homebuyers have prices similar to the rest of Tahoe Park, and they can enjoy proximity to busy Sacramento. They’re also close to not-as-visited retail in the north and local restaurants on 14th Avenue. If locals don’t work downtown, they’re near an industrial district on the eastern side, just across some train tracks. Tahoe Park East won’t have to deal with a ton of noise from the train or nearby warehouses, but homebuyers should expect it to feel busy.
More square footage, bigger yards than Tahoe Park
Apartments and industry make up more than half of the neighborhood, but a few subdivisions have limited inventory. “There’s not many homes here, but they’re going to be bigger than west of 65th Street,” says Gonzales. “You’re more likely to get a traditional three-bed, two-bath over here around 1,400 square feet. The additional bathroom is rare, and you’ll be looking at 1,100 square feet in other parts of Tahoe Park.” Yards are a bit bigger than Tahoe Park, too, but smaller than nearby Colonial Village North. Ranch-styles and two-stories are priced between $325,000 and $600,000. Ranch-styles from the 1960s spread across this range but typically have less square footage; two-stories from the 2020s make up the higher end and have more room. The neighborhood has a CAP Index Crime Score of 6, which is two points higher than the national average.
Getting to midtown: Route 50 and public transit
Commuters are 5 miles from midtown Sacramento via Route 50, which has an on-ramp just north of the neighborhood. Though most people have a car, they might also use the bus station on 65th and Broadway. This No. 38 bus runs every half-hour and takes about 45 minutes to midtown. Another option is the Light Rail’s Gold Line, accessible on the California State University Sacramento campus. This station, about 2 miles north of the neighborhood, is a 15-minute ride to midtown. More locally, UC Davis Children’s Hospital makes up the southern side of the neighborhood, so healthcare workers can walk.
Nearby shopping and Tallac Village bar scene
Tallac Village Shopping Center is west on 14th Avenue, and it’s become a nightlife hangout. Here, Sac City Brews offers a beer and a food menu, and it butts up against a sports bar called Tallac Lounge. Village Drive-In is across the street for burgers and shakes, and it's been family-run since 1979. While it’s not as commercial as nearby Stockton Boulevard, the north side of Tahoe Park East hosts businesses large and small. Target can provide for grocery and everyday needs. South on 65th Street, Kansai Ramen & Sushi House blends modern décor with traditional food; Dane’s Panderia is in the same strip mall and serves sweet treats of all sorts.
Quick drive to Sacramento City Schools, walkable high
Suy:u Elementary is 2 miles south of the neighborhood and gets a C-plus from Niche. Umoja International Academy is 2 miles toward midtown, and it’s rated a B. With a focus on career pathways and International Baccalaureate, students can enroll in the Middle Years Program for grades seven through 10; they can progress to the Diploma Programme for grades 11 and 12. Hiram W. Johnson High is another option for grades 9 through 12: it’s in the middle of Tahoe Park East, and it receives a C-plus. “You’re in walking distance of the school without having to cross any major streets,” says Gonzales. “Anywhere else you have cross thoroughfares like 65th Street and 14th Avenue.” If students want to stay local for college, CSU Sacramento is 2 miles north.
Three parks around the neighborhood, Tahoe Park events
In addition to its playground and soccer pitch, Mae Fong Park features an outdoor fitness court and table tennis. Three baseball fields at Tahoe Tallac Park have made it a hub for Little League, so visitors can watch practices or games. Just a few blocks west on 14th Street, Tahoe Park has more fields and sports courts. Residents can also attend community events here: from March to October, Food Truck Mania supports local restaurants every fourth Friday, and artisans sell products at its Maker’s Market. This event combines with a costume contest in October, as the Tahoe Park Spook-Tacular haunts the grounds. In the surrounding neighborhood, a hundred-plus homeowners clutter their driveways for April’s Tahoe Park Yard Sale. These events — and many more — are arranged by the Tahoe Park Neighborhood Association, which meets monthly.
