Tallac Village

Situated near highways and Interstate 5
Tallac Village is located near the Golden State Highway (State Route 99), which leads 7 miles northwest to downtown Sacramento, while the El Dorado Freeway (U.S. Route 50) is just north. Commuting into the city usually takes about 15 minutes or so. Interstate 5 sits about 6 miles west. Most rely on their cars to run errands, but there are bus stops along Fruitridge Road, which is the neighborhood’s southern boundary. Designated bike lanes only run along the perimeter of the neighborhood. Mercy General Hospital is roughly 4 miles north, while Sacramento International Airport is about 19 miles northwest.Oysters on the half shell at The Kitchen Restaurant
Restaurants are located outside of the neighborhood. Most follow Sacramento’s Farm-to-Fork philosophy, adding fresh, locally sourced ingredients to their cuisine, such as The Kitchen Restaurant near downtown. As a MICHELIN star winner and semi-finalist for the James Beard Outstanding Restaurant Award, this family-owned establishment has been serving six-course dinners since 1991. Cafe Bernardo in Midtown offers a variety of breakfast options, from bacon and avocado omelets to pumpkin spice pancakes, along with sandwiches and burgers for lunch and dinner. “Mom and pop eateries sit to the west along Stockton Boulevard,” says Nastro. “We call this area ‘Little Saigon’ for all the great pho dishes offered.”Grocery options include Bel Air in the neighborhood’s southern end, plus Foods Company inside the Stockridge Plaza shopping center; retailers like Ross Dress for Less are also located here. Specialty shops, boutiques and more restaurants are located downtown.
Sports and playgrounds at two nearby parks
Parks and recreational areas sit outside of the neighborhood. Lawrence Park is a few miles west in neighboring Fruitridge Oaks, and features 5 acres of picnic areas, a playground and a softball field. Tahoe Park, located a few miles north, is a 17-acre green space that includes a soccer field, a playground and a horseshoe pit. Barbecues accompany picnic shelters here, and volleyball players can practice their serves on the court.Modestly priced ranch-style homes
Sidewalk-lined streets are dotted with ranch-style homes from the 1950s. Most of these feature brick or lap siding, shaded front walkways and up to four bedrooms. Many homes come with a narrow driveway that leads to a one-car garage or carport. Many residents park additional vehicles on the street. Home sizes vary from between 840 square feet to nearly 2,000 square feet, with prices ranging from $310,000 to $520,000. “Investment companies come in to renovate some of the older homes here,” says Nastro. “Updates include new kitchens, bathrooms and laminate flooring. Contractors actually live either in Tallac Village or nearby, so residents share the street with construction trucks.”Career prep and engineering clubs at district schools
Kids may attend Sacramento City Unified district schools, including Mark Twain Elementary, which earns a C from Niche. Umoja International Academy serves students from Grade 7 to 12, and earns a B from Niche. This school is an International Baccalaureate World School, offering the Middle Years and Diploma Programmes which help students make connections between classroom learning and the real world. At B-minus-rated Hiram W. Johnson High, students can choose to join one of five academic academies, including business and law. Located in the neighborhood’s western end, West Campus High School earns an A-plus from Niche and is rated the number one standout high school in the Sacramento area. As a magnet college preparatory academy, it hosts college readiness events and test preparation as well as after school engineering clubs.Annual Farm-to-Fork festivities
While there aren’t events in the neighborhood, Sacramento has plenty to offer. Every September, Sacramento hosts the Farm-to-Fork Festival on the Capitol Mall. This two-day event draws thousands from California and across the country for cooking demonstrations, Grammy Award-winning artists, food vendors and a special tasting of culinary delights from over 20 area chefs.
