Supportive residents and city developments are pushing this community forward

East End, a small community of St. Cloud, is currently undergoing a transition, supported by both the city and its passionate locale. Along with economic redevelopment plans drafted by the city, which focus on uplifting current residents, local business owners and residents are embracing change while fostering a sense of community through new events like the annual FestiFall East. “It’s an area that’s been neglected on the east side,” says Mary Ellen Richter, a local broker with Kerber Castle Realty Group. “But with the city putting in a lot of money over the last few years and into the next, it’s really cleaned up.” Built through the early to mid-20th century across from downtown on the other side of the Mississippi River, East End’s homes share space with enduring local restaurants and big-box retailers.

East End's 20th century homes

East End's residential sections comprise the southwestern and northeastern portions of the community, separated by light industry, some retail and an Amtrak train station. However, each residential zone presents a similar landscape, where sidewalks line wide streets. Alleyways on the backside of houses provide space for parking. The homes are an array of architectural styles, from Cape Cod and ranch styles to American Vernaculars. “It’s a nice old neighborhood,” Richter says. “It’s not cookie cutter and has a lot of character.” Adding to the appeal of homes are old-growth trees spread throughout and differing exterior colors that set each home apart from the next. Depending on size and condition, prices range from $130,000 to $230,000.

Raymond Park's year-round opportunities

Raymond Park is situated directly northeast along Raymond Avenue. During warmer months, little ones climb about the playground and tend to vegetables in the community garden. When winter rolls around, visitors make laps around its ice-skating rink, which stays open into the evening. Similarly, Eastside Boys & Girls Club next door offers indoor activities and clubs to keep children busy throughout the year. Wilson Park sits a mile northeast of the community along the Mississippi River. Trips to the park include taking strolls along riverfront trails, exploring its colorful playground and dropping the boat in at its public launch for spending days on the water.

The eats of enduring local restaurants

When looking to shop, residents head to Target immediately south of the train station. Past the Target and state Route 23, folks shop for groceries at Cash Wise Foods. For meals out, Val’s Rapid Service is a popular drive-in spot on Lincoln Avenue Southeast that has served the community with traditional cheeseburgers and milkshakes since 1959. Copper Kitchen sits three blocks northeast and is the community’s go-to place for American-style breakfast. The Waseka family has run the local diner since 1966, spanning three generations.

Coming together for the Annual FestiFall East

In late September 2024, the neighborhood threw its first-ever Annual FestiFall East. Sponsored by local business owners, the autumnal celebration inspires the community to support each other. Held along East Saint Germain Street, the event replaces the usual car traffic with a classic car parade and a street art fair. Those in attendance can also catch live music at Beaudreau’s Bar and check out various activities for all ages. St. Cloud Area Farmers Market, held in Lady Slipper Lot on 6th Avenue South a mile southwest, connects residents with the fresh produce and foods of local vendors every Saturday morning from May through October.

Getting around on the Metro Bus

Interstate 94, a 6-mile drive southwest, links the area to downtown Minneapolis, 70 miles southeast. The thoroughfare also connects travelers to Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport, 10 miles farther in the same direction. Closer to home is the medical care at CentraCare – St. Cloud Hospital, 2 miles northwest, and the campus of St. Cloud State University, a mile south off University Drive. Residents can also take advantage of Metro Bus stops throughout the community, as well as hop on the Amtrak at St. Cloud Station on East Saint Germain Street.

East End Vision plan outlines new growth

East End’s CAP Index crime score is 7, compared to the national average of 4. However, it scores an 8 for other violent crimes. The city is currently working to improve overall safety through several different programs. The Greater St. Cloud Public Safety Foundation recently opened an outpost in the neighborhood at Salem Lutheran Church on Riverside Drive, which focuses on providing free healthcare services and learning opportunities for college students and post-graduates. The city also recently completed the East End Vision – Small Area Plan, a redevelopment outline for attracting new businesses to the community to create a lasting positive impact.
