Northside is known for its historic homes and modern amenities

Though St. Joseph is well known for its turn-of-the-century homes, it's value that tends to draw homeowners. “Historic housing and architecture bring a lot of people,” says Kim Schutte, the city’s historic preservation planner. “We have an amazing inventory and property prices are very low, so it’s an easy price of entry.” Amenities like plentiful shopping and hundreds of acres of green space are also a driving factor for many transplants.

Vintage houses line the streets

Closer to downtown, homes are in a neat checkerboard pattern on quarter-acre lots. The median construction date is in the mid-1920s, often meaning renovations are in the property's future. Cape Cods and bungalows are priced from the $30,000s to the $220,000s, depending on condition. Larger Victorian and colonial homes start in the $90,000s and peak in the $310,000s. Subdivisions closer to the country club area frequently have well-maintained midcentury homes that usually sell in the $150,000s to the $320,000s.

A rose garden, aquatic center and acres of wilderness

Krug Park is the city’s largest public park. The 165-acre expanse opened in 1902 and includes a rose garden, walking trails and a fully stocked fishing lagoon. Families come for the playground and picnic areas while sightseers visit the amphitheater and the “Castle,” an Italian-style building built in the 1920s. Adjacent to the park is the Northside Recreational Complex, which features a pool and aquatic center, tennis courts and a lighted baseball field. The St. Joseph Country Club has a private 18-hole championship golf course and a clubhouse with a fitness center and pool. The Sunbridge Hills Conservation Area offers over 100 acres of untouched wilderness popular with anglers, hunters and hikers.

The Shoppes at North Village have modern retail and dining options

The Shoppes at North Village is a popular spot for chain restaurants and retail, including Target, T.J. Maxx and Kohl’s. Brother’s Market is just around the corner for groceries. Originally built as a saloon in 1878, the First Ward House is known today for its relaxed atmosphere, historical trivia and smoked wings. Taco Bandido is a St. Joseph mainstay, serving burritos, tacos and other Mexican comfort foods since the 1960s.

Lafayette High School sponsors a wide range of extracurriculars

Students can begin at Pershing Elementary, which has a B-minus grade from Niche. From there, they can attend Robidoux Middle School, rated C-plus. Lafayette High School has a B-minus and varied extracurricular calendar, with active clubs for speech and debate, orchestra and esports.

Community celebrations with parades and cultural festivals

The Northside Parade includes antique cars, floats and marchers playing music and throwing candy to spectators. The neighborhood celebration starts in the morning and ends with food, games and contests at Krug Park. St. Patrick’s Fiesta has been organized by St. Patrick Church since 1969. The two-day festival spotlights Latin American culture with dancing, a silent auction and the coronation of that year’s Queen.

Major highways and public transportation through Go St. Joe

The main area thoroughfares are Interstate 229 and U.S. Route 59, which converge in downtown St. Joseph, just south of the neighborhood. Kansas City is about 60 miles away. Public buses are available through Go St. Joe, with stops along Chestnut Street and Highland Avenue.
