Historic homes and neighborly vibes
Lafayette Square is a community where the elegance of the late 1800s lives on, from its gardenesque public park to its colorful clusters of Victorian homes. These features made Lafayette Square popular 150 years ago, and they still draw new residents today, along with its easy access to downtown, nearby universities, and St. Louis’s central corridor. “If you’re looking for a neighborhood where everybody looks out for their neighbors, and there’s a deep sense of community, but in a beautiful historic setting in an urban environment, this is the place,” says Creighton Brinson, a resident of the neighborhood and Realtor for RE/MAX Results, who has been selling homes in the neighborhood for twenty years. “A lot of people have moved from the suburbs to Lafayette Square and like it because they don’t need a lawn guy and a mulch guy and a leaf guy. If they want to get their hands dirty, they can volunteer to plant bulbs in the neighborhood with one of the many community organizations.”

A stunning collection of Victorian homes
In the decades after the Civil War, Lafayette Square was the neighborhood of choice for the who’s who of Victorian St. Louis society: city mayors, business tycoons, and the like. The community is dominated by late 19th-century Victorian townhouses built in the Second Empire architectural style, which have all been carefully preserved thanks to the city's strict codes. “Inside, it could be like a New York brownstone with lots of architectural detail, or completely modern and streamlined — you don’t know because everyone’s exteriors conform to Second Empire Victorian,” Brison says, adding, “There’s nothing left to restore. The homes are on their second and third iterations.” Prices typically range from $425,000 to $725,000, according to Brison, depending on size and condition.

The neighborhood’s centerpiece
“The glue that holds the neighborhood together is Lafayette Park,” Brinson says. At 30 acres large, the park is considered by many to be the oldest urban park west of the Mississippi River. The park’s manicured lawns, tranquil waterways, and rainbow of flowers make it a destination for picnics, walks, and weddings. Neighbors gather for frequent events, such as free summertime concerts or outdoor movies hosted by the Lafayette Square Neighborhood Association. Both cyclers and spectators won’t want to miss the annual Tour de Lafayette bike race, which attracts competitors worldwide. “When the race is coming through the neighborhood, all the neighbors are out on their porches watching and having parties,” Brinson says. “The bikers fly by so fast you can feel the wind behind them.”

When it comes to restaurants, Lafayette Square is known for locally-owned establishments, many of which are concentrated around Park Avenue. Residents can enjoy a taste of Italy at Eleven Eleven Mississippi and dig into Tuscan dishes like wild boar ravioli. When it comes time to pick up groceries or items for the house, residents need only walk across Jefferson Avenue to find modern conveniences like Save A Lot supermarket and Family Dollar. Though Lafayette Square can feel like a world unto itself, it’s only 2 miles from the skyscrapers, ballparks, and nightlife of downtown St. Louis.

Of anywhere I have lived LS is by far the safest. No where is really that safe in this world, but this is very good place. Regular patrols, support of local police.

From downtown, outdoor activities are a bit more limited. There are some wonderful (large parks) including forest and tower grove parks. Mountain biking (singletrack) is superb out in the county, but takes a little drive to get to it. Canoing and Kayaking also is possible on the rivers, but the more beautiful ones are 3+ hour drive away. Rock climbing is also a distance away, the most significant place about 3.5 hours east.
