Head to “The Heart of St. Louis”
Residents are within walking distance of Forest Park, also known as “The Heart of St. Louis.” The park was opened in 1876 and receives 13 million visitors a year. At over 1,300 acres, it is officially bigger than New York’s Central Park, and visitors will find so much more than just expansive green space. One can browse the halls of art at the Saint Louis Art Museum, while animal lovers can head to the world-class Saint Louis Zoo. Other amenities include golf courses, tennis centers, a greenhouse, and a municipal theatre called “The Muny.” “We consider Forest Park our backyard,” says Boxdorfer. “It is one of the great features of the neighborhood that we can walk to the park.”Shopping and Dining at Delmar Loop
Delmar Loop, known to locals as “The Loop,” is a famed commercial district along the neighborhood’s northern border with an eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, and venues. The sound of St. Louis blues music is common here, as the street is home to numerous live music venues such as The Pageant or Delmar Hall. Blueberry Hill is a staple restaurant famous for its cheeseburgers and darts room. “You’d be hard-pressed to pick a favorite restaurant because there are so many, and the majority are locally owned,” says Boxdorfer. The Loop also pays homage to famous St. Louisans like musician Chuck Berry and actor John Goodman at the St. Louis Walk of Fame. Fresh produce and groceries can be found at United Provisions, while Snarf’s Sandwiches is a quaint sandwich shop in the middle of the neighborhood. St. Roch Catholic Church serves the area. The Porch Festival
The Porch Festival is a neighborhood-wide event featuring local bands playing live music on residents’ porches. Attendees can walk through the streets to enjoy a diverse music selection. The festival is free to attend and takes place every September.Timeless architecture with a variety of styles
Housing in Skinker DeBaliviere began to develop in 1904 following the conclusion of the World’s Fair at Forest Park. This has resulted in a variety of timeless architecture, with part of the neighborhood being declared a historic district. Styles range from brick craftsman-style homes to classic American foursquares, and most residences have been well-maintained over the years. The neighborhood also has multifamily options to accommodate students from the nearby Washington University. “There are numerous apartments purchased by the University, and some have been converted into condos,” says Boxdorfer. “It's very diverse - we have lots of students, artists, and people from all walks of life.” Condos begin pricing at $200,000, while larger, stately homes found in the private Parkview neighborhood can top $1 million. The market is very competitive, and houses sell faster than the national average.Access to the MetroLink
The Forest Park – DeBaliveiere train station grants direct access to the Red Line and Blue Line operated by the St. Louis MetroLink. With multiple bus stops throughout the neighborhood, residents have ample access to efficient public transportation routes. Commuters with a car can hop on the Forest Park Parkway to head to downtown just 7 miles away. St. Louis Lambert International Airport is 10 miles north of the neighborhood.Public Schools and Higher Education
The neighborhood is home to Hamilton Elementary School, which scored a B rating on Niche. Students may continue their education at Yeatman Middle School and Sumner High School, both of which scored a D-plus rating on Niche. Sumner High School was constructed in 1908 and is famous for its Colonial-Revival architecture. Parents looking for a private school option may consider New City School, which received an A-plus rating on Niche. Washington University offers higher education and allows graduates to stay close to home as the campus is nearby. The University consistently ranks high among collegiate rankings and maintains an extensive alum network, including 11 Pulitzer Prize winners.
