Vandeventer is a St. Louis neighborhood with a history of engagement
Vandeventer residents past and present have been active members of their community. Over the 150 years since homes first popped up here, the St. Louis neighborhood’s inhabitants have included trailblazing politicians and civil rights heroes. Today neighbors are involved with civic organizations across the city, and they’re quick to band together to plant dozens of trees and pick up litter off the streets, says Judith Arnold, a Vandeventer resident and urban planner for the St. Louis Association of Community Organizations. “I can snap my finger and have 100 residents ready to come help clean up.” While other neighborhoods in north St. Louis are trying to start the process of revitalization, Vandeventer has been on that path for decades, resulting in a stable community full of personally invested residents, Arnold says. “The neighborhood hopes to be a model for neighborhoods north of it that are struggling with redevelopment.”
Buyers will find renovated Victorian-era homes
Beautification efforts in the neighborhood extend beyond the sidewalks. Thirty years ago a trend of renovation spruced up Vandeventer’s Italianate and Victorian homes built more than 120 years ago. Plus infill development in the 2000s brought newer houses to the area. There are some vacant homes in Vandeventer, but Arnold says those properties typically are snatched up and renovated. Three-bedroom rehab projects can be found on the market in the low $100,000s, but prices extend into the mid-$200,000s for move-in ready homes. Buyers won’t face a hectic market, as the average house sells in roughly 150 days – nearly four times slower than the national average.
Students may go to Pamoja Preparatory Academy and Sumner High
Elementary and middle school-aged students in Vandeventer may speak Swahili during the school day at Pamoja Preparatory Academy, a neighborhood school operated by St. Louis Public Schools. Pamoja emphasizes African-centered education, while also covering the same core subjects as other local public schools. After eighth grade students head a mile outside the neighborhood to Sumner High School. Niche awards Sumner a B-minus for its athletics, with teams that range from basketball to esports.
Recreation destinations include Turner Park and Green Rivers Greenway
The area’s rich history extends to Turner Park, a green space in the middle of the neighborhood named after James Milton Turner, an educator, foreign diplomat and civil rights activist in the decades after the Civil War. The park's modern play area is outfitted with a splash pad, musical instruments and a soft, safe playground surface. Residents also can use the loop trail that winds around the 1.4-acre park when they need a brief exercise. Those who enjoy a longer hike will be excited to hear about public agency Green Rivers Greenway’s plan to convert the tracks of a defunct streetcar into a walkable, 3.5-mile greenway that runs through seven neighborhoods, including Vandeventer. The project is still in the planning phase, with no estimated completion date.
Firehouse 282 and neighboring Central West End offer dining options
For a local hangout with good food, pop into Firehouse 282 on Vandeventer Avenue. Behind its red, wooden doors there was once a fire station, but today patrons can find cold drinks, live music and fried buffalo fish filets. Besides a handful of storefronts and offices on Sarah Street, Vandeventer isn’t loaded with commercial areas. However it borders the Central West End neighborhood, where cafes, bistros and bars abound. Among these businesses is a Schnucks, the closest spot to pick up groceries.
