Seven miles from downtown Saint Louis
Located only seven miles from downtown Saint Louis, the West End neighborhood has seen a lot of progressive change over time. “I grew up in the area,” says local resident Hana Uddin, who now works in the city at Ameren Corporation. “I’ve loved seeing how the neighborhood has grown and become more diverse throughout the years.” The area is a mix of the old, the new and the in between. It isn’t uncommon to see brand new homes next to abandoned lots. But the community works together, “we call it the W.E.,” says Keaira Caldwell-Anderson, real estate broker for Hybrid Real Estate and West End resident. “Because WE do things for each other. And we do it because it’s about loving where you live.”
The West End has a unique urban vibe.
1900s Four squares and new multifamily Gothic Revivals
Many homes are Four squares, Colonial Revivals and Gothic Revivals and it’s not uncommon to find 100-year-old homes next to brand new construction. Gothic Revival multifamily dwellings are common throughout the neighborhood and can sell from around $52,000 to $82,000 with a few outliers reaching up to about $260,000. With a median price of $175,000 for homes in West End, homebuyers can find Four square homes available between around $70,000 and $200,000. “The neighborhood has created a plan for the future,” says Caldwell-Anderson. “There are former residents returning to the neighborhood and buying derelict properties because they want the area to succeed.”
Close to Interstate 64 and the MetroLink
With only three miles to Interstate 64, traffic can become quite congested along the roads surrounding Forest Park due to attractions within the park such as the zoo and the outdoor theater. However, the neighborhood itself is more quiet. “Forest Park is so big that traffic is generally contained to the side with the zoo and highway,” says Uddin. “Everything is just so close that a lot of people walk.” There is a metro stop at the southwestern corner of the neighborhood, along the Red Line with services out to the Saint Louis Lambert International Airport, scheduled to take about 40 minutes.
148-year-old school and small classroom sizes
Kids living in the West End may attend school at Hamilton Elementary School, where there is a student-teacher ratio of 14-to-1. The school scores a C- on Niche. Students can then go to Yeatman-Liddell Preparatory Middle School, which scores a D+ on Niche, for 6th to 8th grade. The century-plus-old Sumner High School begins accepting students at 9th grade. The school receives a D+ on Niche.
Groceries within two miles and local sport bars
There are several grocery options within two miles of the neighborhood, including a Schnucks, Whole Foods, ALDI and B & B Market and Grill. There are also several restaurants, including First Watch for breakfast and brunch. Sauce on the Side serves home-made calzones including the Meat Me in St. Louie which has pepperoni, Italian sausage, PROVEL cheese and a Mascarpone-Ricotta Blend in the calzone. Sports fans can enjoy Mack’s Bar and Grill, which typically fills with both students and residents. “It’s a little hole in the wall,” says Uddin. “But it’s packed in there every week no matter what.”
Forest Park is located close to West End, MO.
Three miles from 1,300-acre park and cultural venues
West End is home to the Ruth Porter Mall Park, a long, but thin eight-acre park stretching through the neighborhood from Delmar Boulevard to Etzel Avenue. There are other parks within the neighborhood boundaries including Amherst Park and Gwen B. Giles Park. Just two miles to the south is Forest Park, a 1,300-acre park which is home to five major cultural venues, including a zoo, art museum, an outdoor theater, history museum and science center.
City spirit accessible with the MetroLink
Being close to downtown means residents can enjoy Saint Louis sports. Busch Stadium, home of the Saint Louis Cardinals, and Enterprise Center, home of the Saint Louis Blues, are about seven miles away and easily accessible via the Red Line at Delmar Loop. “There’s a lot of city spirit in the area,” says Uddin. “The new soccer team has become huge.” Saint Louis’ soccer stadium is a little over five miles away.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students.
