Getting around the Twin Cities is easy from Elmwood
Located along Highways 7 and 100 and offering a less-than-10-minute drive to downtown, Elmwood attracts those who want a quick commute but don’t want to live in the heart of the city. It’s located in St. Louis Park, a well-established Minneapolis suburb with the commercial amenities of an urban area, an expansive park system and highly rated schools. A large selection of townhouses and condos makes this area especially attractive to those who don’t want the maintenance of a single-family home, and blocks of 1940s bungalows and ranch-style homes beckon those looking for a bit more space. Less than a mile from Methodist Hospital, this neighborhood provides convenient housing options for its employees, and it’s only two miles from Bde Maka Ska, Minneapolis’ largest lake.
Highways 100 and 7 run through St. Louis Park for convenient access to the Twin Cities.

A quick commute to downtown from this bikeable neighborhood
In Elmwood, “You’re nestled between Highway 7 and Excelsior Boulevard, with easy access to Highway 100, making commuting very easy,” says Realtor Kim Pease, who’s sold in the Twin Cities for 35 years. It takes less than 10 minutes to drive to downtown Minneapolis, or commuters can bike the Cedar Lake Trail, which cuts through Elmwood and connects to downtown, in about 30 minutes. With dense streets and some shops and restaurants, the neighborhood is somewhat walkable, and bike lanes on major roads make biking feasible. The nearest hospital, Methodist Hospital, is a mile away, and getting to the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport takes about 15 minutes. Metro Transit serves the neighborhood with bus stops on 36th Street and Excelsior.

Local restaurants and nearby retail options
Elmwood’s neighborhood eateries include The Taco Shop, known for its birria tacos; Bunny’s Bar & Grill, a longstanding sports bar with free food during happy hour; and, across Excelsior, Hold The Wheat, a gluten-free bakery serving sweet and savory pastries. “Bunny’s Bar & Grill is not to be missed,” Pease says. “It’s not only a local hangout: having opened in 1933, it’s a destination with a lot of history.” Within Elmwood, retail options include Micro Center, Burlington and a collection of specialty stores, and across Highway 100, there’s a Target and fast-food options like Starbucks, Chipotle and McDonald’s. Most residents shop for groceries at Fresh Thyme Market or Trader Joe’s, which are both within a mile of the neighborhood.

Neighborhood parks and Bde Maka Ska
Elmwood has three small public parks in the neighborhood — Jorvig Park, Center Park and Justad Park — and most residents can walk to at least one of the three. All three parks have playgrounds, Justad Park has a basketball court, and Center Park has a small soccer field. Elmwood is about two miles from Bde Maka Ska, Minneapolis’ largest lake. Here, residents can enjoy swimming, sailing, kayaking and other water sports, and they can walk or bike separate three-mile trails. Residents make use of the lake even in the winter, to go for a polar plunge or ice skate on the frozen lake.

Large, bushy trees shade the lawns of residential streets, where a variety of early- and mid-20th-century architecture includes options like bungalows, farmhouses and ranch-style homes. When residents want to downsize, they move into one of the neighborhood’s many townhouses or condos. These options appeal to empty nesters and young professionals alike, with some communities being 55-plus and others open to all residents. The neighborhood’s townhouses and condos concentrate on the north and south ends of the community, which are both a quicker walk to the neighborhood’s commercial amenities. Prices start in the lower $200,000s for a one-bedroom condo and reach the lower $500,000s for a recently renovated three-bedroom house. On average, prices in Elmwood are just above the average for the Minneapolis metro area.

GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
