Bike downtown from this St. Louis Park neighborhood

In Texa-Tonka, biking to work on a paved trail set off from major roads isn’t a dream; it’s a reality. The 4.5-mile Cedar Lake Trail cuts through this St. Louis Park neighborhood and connects to downtown Minneapolis, allowing residents to get there by bike in about 30 minutes, or they can drive there in ten. With two parks in the neighborhood and a small lake nearby, Texa-Tonka makes spending time outside easy, whether in a shared space or simply in a large front or backyard. In St. Louis Park, “The lots are bigger than when you’re closer to downtown,” says Realtor Michael Kootsikas, who’s sold in the Twin Cities for nearly 10 years. The lot sizes, however, don’t compromise access to urban amenities: local restaurants are 10-minute walk away, and getting to shopping centers is only a short drive.

Early- and mid-20th century homes

Texa-Tonka has a mix of early- and mid-20th-century housing, mostly cozy cottages with a few ranch-style homes and American Foursquares. These homes’ interiors have often been updated to accommodate modern lifestyles, but they keep their exterior charm, making them unique compared to homes in other Minneapolis suburbs. “There’s a lot of character to the housing here, more than in some other areas because it was built out in the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s,” says Realtor Gary Metchnek, who’s sold in the area for over 20 years. “In most of the other suburbs, you’re going to find more cookie-cutter homes.” In addition to single-family homes, there are a few townhouses in the neighborhood. Prices tend to fall between $300,000 and $500,000.
