Stretching from more rural areas toward Pelican Lake into a continually developing town center, St. Michael has undergone exceptional population and commercial growth over the last few decades. “When my family first moved here, it was a small farming community where everyone knew their neighbors,” says Scott Pedersen, a member of the St. Michael City Council who’s lived in the city since 1980. “Now there’s more than 20,000 people here, but it still has a hometown feeling.” With its proximity to I-94, St. Michael has become a Twin Cities commuter hub which prioritizes local commercial, public park, school system and community development.

New construction subdivisions into rural plots
“There are some older homes close to the center of town, but most people are coming to live in new construction townhouses, apartments and single-family developments,” Pedersen says. Waves of subdivisions hit St. Michael in the mid-90s, early 2000s and 2020s, building up cul-de-sacs with varied HOA-involvement in new traditional styles ranging from Craftsman to Colonial Revival. Homes with upward of three-bedrooms sell for $345,000 to $1.2 million depending on square footage, age and lot size. Townhouse communities have popped up since the mid-80s, selling for $180,000 to $475,000. Simple single-family homes built in the mid-1800s through mid-1970s stand on tree-shaded lots of an acre or more to the west of town and on smaller plots near town, selling for $117,000 to $490,000 depending on upgrades, lot size and proximity to small lakes.

St. Michael-Albertville School District
“Part of why we see so much development are our schools. I graduated from the district, and it's only gotten better,” Pedersen says. Kids attend highly rated schools for prekindergarten through 12th grade. One possible pipeline begins at St. Michael Elementary School which earns an A on Niche, followed by Middle School East which earns an A-minus and St. Michael-Albertville High School which earns a B-plus. St. Michael-Albertville High is Niche’s second-best high school in Wright County, and over half of their student body participates in extracurriculars like the state-championship winning wrestling team or theater program.

I-94 commuting, low crime and church services
I-94 runs through Albertville to the north of St. Michael, starting commuters on a 30-mile drive into Minneapolis. St. Cloud is about 38 miles in the opposite direction. St. Michael does not have fixed-route public transportation, so locals typically rely on personal vehicles to get around. Crime in St. Michael is exceptionally low, scoring a 1 out of 10 on the CAP Index compared to the national average of 4, and religious services are available at several churches near the downtown area.

Strip malls and newer small commercial districts along Central Avenue E house most of St. Michael’s shopping and restaurants. Cub, CVS and Walgreens are the nearest sources for essentials, and chains like Dunn Brothers and McDonald’s provide drive-through dining options. Local businesses can be found amongst growing chain offerings, like Main Street Farmer Eatery which uses local produce in their seasonally rotating menus. St. Michael Cinema 15 is an iconic locally owned and operated movie theater that transports movie-goers to a Parisian courtyard in their atrium, complete with a replica Moulin Rouge windmill. For more extensive retailers, folks can drive 3 miles north of Town Center to the Albertville Premium Outlets.

Community parks and lake or river recreation
The city of St. Michael invested nearly $3 million into Town Center Park near City Hall, developing robust community park amenities like a state-of-the-art splash pad, shaded playground, large pavilion and six pickleball courts. “Our goal is to provide green spaces and parks throughout the city,” Pedersen says. “We’re also working toward extending our trail system and places to bike or walk.” Beyond playgrounds and sports courts, locals can fish, launch kayaks or hunt waterfowl at nearby nature reserves and parks like Riverside County Park, Pelican Lake and Beebe Lake Regional Park.
The ever-popular sport of pickleball can be played at Town Center Park in St. Michael.

Daze and Knights Festival
For a weekend each August, St. Michael puts on the Daze & Knights Festival in the fields and buildings around Great River Regional Library and Town Center Park. Throughout the weekend, locals take on the Color Daze 5K Run, visit the petting zoo, enjoy live music, let the kids bounce out some energy in inflatables and peruse dozens of programs and vendors sponsored by the city and local businesses.

Higher flood risk along Crow River
Though most areas of St. Michael are not at elevated risk of flooding, there are zones with a higher risk along Crow River and some of the area’s small lake during times of higher rainfall.
