The North End is a centrally located Saint Paul neighborhood

The North End blends historic charm with convenience, thanks to its central location in Saint Paul. Homes are less expensive than surrounding neighborhoods and give you easy access to Rice Street, one of the city’s main drags that ends at the Minnesota State Capitol. There are plenty of smaller parks in the North End, or you can head to the popular Como Park, only a few minutes away. Between Rice Street and the nearby Frogtown, residents are surrounded by shops and restaurants. You’re less than 5 miles from Downtown Saint Paul and 15 miles from downtown Minneapolis.

Historic homes draw people to the North End

Realtor Matthew Kennedy with LPT Realty, who has lived in Saint Paul since 2011, says, “People go there because they like the charm and character of the older homes, especially if they can find ones with the original woodwork inside.” There’s a mix of workers cottages, Craftsman styles and bungalows from the late 1800s and early 1900s, as well as some mid-20th-century ranch-style houses. Newer construction is rare, and mostly consists of townhouses and condos. The median single-family sale price is on par with Frogtown, but is less than in Como Park. Prices generally range from the low $100,000s to the low $500,000s, depending on size and condition. Townhouses and condos cost between the mid-$100,000s and the mid-$300,000s. Over half of the residents rent.

Saint Paul Public School District gives families flexibility

The North End is part of the Saint Paul Public School District, where families apply to their preferred schools. Students are given priority enrollment based on several factors, including their proximity to the school and interest in magnet programs. Washington Technology High School, which focuses heavily on STEM, is in the neighborhood.

Rice Street and Maryland Avenue meet in the North End

Most people who live in North End drive or take the bus. Thankfully, the neighborhood’s location makes it easy to get around. “The biggest drive in the North End is that it’s connected to everything,” Kennedy says. “It has Maryland and Rice that intersect in the middle of it, and those are both major arteries in the city.” You also have access to interstates 35 East and 94, and Metro Transit buses stop throughout the neighborhood. Downtown Saint Paul is about a five-minute commute, while downtown Minneapolis is about 20 minutes away. The convenience comes at a small cost. “You will have the city noise, because Maryland and Rice are both very, very busy,” Kennedy says.

Locals spend time at neighborhood parks and Como Park

The North End has no shortage of parks and community spaces. Options include:

  • Trout Brook Nature Sanctuary, which has hiking trails and a colorful mural
  • Front Park, which is known for its skate park
  • Cayuga Park, which marks the start of the 18-mile Gateway State Trail that ends in Stillwater
  • North End Community Center, which has a playground, gym and after-school programs
  • Rice Street Library, which regularly has book clubs, storytimes and other activities
Como Park, one of the city’s most popular parks, is a short drive away. “At Como, you have the lake and all the attractions that come with the lake,” Kennedy says. “There’s the golf course, which is always busy. Then you’ve got the regional park, where people go to hang out.” One of the standout amenities is the Como Park Zoo & Conservatory, which offers free admission to walk through the gardens and visit the animals. “There’s a kiddie park there too, with rides and games and stuff for kids,” Kennedy says.

The Minnesota State Capitol hosts events

The historic Minnesota State Capitol is known for its stunning Beaux-Arts-inspired design. Besides hosting regular tours, the Capitol is home to popular events like the Minnesota Songkran Festival, which is jam-packed with Thai traditions, and the afterparty for the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon. You are also close to Falcon Heights, which hosts the annual Minnesota State Fair.

Residents shop and dine along Rice Street and at HmongTown Marketplace

Between Rice Street, Como Park and the surrounding neighborhoods, residents have plenty of restaurant options. Here’s just a taste of what’s available:

  • Tin Cup’s, a landmark bar and restaurant that opened in 1946
  • Friends Cafe, which serves Burmese food like mohinga and curry
  • Blues Saloon, which regularly has live music
  • Conny’s Creamy Cone, a seasonal ice cream parlor that draws crowds in during the summer
  • Dock & Paddle, a lakeside restaurant in Como Park
You’re also minutes from HmongTown Marketplace in Frogtown, an indoor and outdoor market with over 125 vendors, including restaurants, hair stylists, grocers and clothing stores. There’s an outdoor farmers market that runs from June through October every year. It is such a popular destination that Kennedy recommends going during the week if you can. “Don’t go after work hours and don’t go on the weekend, or you’ll never get there,” he says. “It actually backs up traffic on Rice Street, it’s that busy.” You can also get groceries from Double Dragon Foods and do the rest of your shopping in Roseville.
