Historical San Andreas is the county seat of Calaveras County
San Andreas, in the Sierra Nevada foothills, is the Calaveras County Seat. The county courthouse and archives, the Chamber of Commerce and various agencies are based here. "It has government and a lot of people with long-standing ties to the area," says Dan Seider, president/broker at Big Trees Real Estate. The gold rush of the mid-1800s had a significant impact on San Andreas, now registered as a California Historical Landmark. It's considered a town despite being unincorporated. "It's not a very big town; people move there because they want to live in a small town and raise their kids there," Seider says. The population is about 2,900, according to U.S. Census estimates.

A variety of home ages, styles and prices in San Andreas
Though there are some late-19th-century and early 20th-century homes, such as Victorians and bungalows, most houses date from the 1950s through the 2010s. Among them are ranch-style homes and contemporaries. Subdivisions in the area include Toyanza, Gold Hunter Gate and Mountain Ranch. Prices are typically about $140,000 to $470,000, though mobile and manufactured homes range from about $30,000 to $280,000.
Wildfires continue to threaten the region and can affect the availability of home insurance policies. The California FAIR Plan, a program for high-risk properties, is an option, though Seider says homeowners should be aware of coverage limitations.

History connected to native peoples, the gold rush and a bandit
The region, long the home of the indigenous Miwok peoples, experienced fast-paced development during the gold rush. "The biggest thing is gold-rush history, especially with San Andreas. Lots and lots of people came here. And water was used to wash away land for mining, so the whole area changed physically," Seider says. Historical sites within the Calaveras County Museum Complex include the Hall of Records, a courthouse and the old jail. Charles E. Boles, a famous outlaw known as "Black Bart" and "the Gentleman Bandit," was jailed here in 1883. Seider says Boles was thought of fondly by some: "He stole from stagecoaches and things like that. But he never killed anyone; he just robbed people."
Stores and restaurants along the Golden Chain Highway
The historical commercial area of San Andreas is around the intersection of Main and Saint Charles streets. Saint Charles Street is a portion of the main thoroughfare state Route 49, which is also called the Golden Chain Highway. Businesses include Momo's Brand - Used Thriftique, Star Donuts and Gooney's Bar and Grill. Within a mile stretch of the highway in either direction are more stores, restaurants and service providers. Treat's has been open since 1852 and sells groceries and hardware store items.

Some of San Andreas is walkable, but much is car dependent
Besides interior streets within subdivisions and the walkable commercial area around Main Street, San Andreas is mostly car dependent. For public transportation, there's the Calaveras Connect Red Line, a fixed route of about 40 miles from Valley Springs to Arnold. Direct-Connect Dial-a-Ride service and transportation vouchers for seniors' medical appointments are also available. The Dignity Health Mark Twain Medical Center is on Mountain Ranch Road. People may work for the county government, the school district or local businesses. Others commute to cities in the region. Stockton, about 43 miles southwest, has the closest passenger airport, the Stockton Metropolitan Airport, with service on Allegiant Air.
